Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

If you mean Night Reign: It does have single player. It's "multiplayer only" in the sense that even in single player, you will have NPC cooperators.

Vaati has a video detailing the game from his time in the playtest.

I didn't know that - that's reasso. No, I meant Duskbloods. Given its apparent PvPvE nature, I'm wondering if the game will be playable exclusively online as kind of a life service title or not

I didn't watch the Nintendo thing so this is the first even hearing of Duskbloods, but after seeing the trailer... It looks like Nightreign, but for Bloodborne's world instead of Elden Ring.

I was already on the fence with Nightreign, but seeing them working on two things simultaneously that look so similar and have the same PvPvE gimmick is cause for concern.

Neightreign is only PvE, not PvPvE.

I also think both these games are smaller projects, especially Nightreign. I wouldn't expect these to replace traditional souls games.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Let's hope they don't. Kind of weird that two such projects are announced back to back

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Yea I feel ya

I hope this and nightreign isn't the start of fromsoftware dud releases. No one else hits the soulsborne genre just right.

Lies of P is hella good, as is Lords of the Fallen. Aside from minor little differences, they feel super close to a Fromsoft game.

I'll second LoP. I've finished the game twice on my jailbroken PS4, loved the game, got it for my PS5 and am currently on my second playthrough on PS5 and will probably go for another one after that, totalling 5 playthroughs. I just really love the game

Nightreign kinda' scares me, I'll be perfectly frank.

It's hard not to look at it as a response to Space Marine 2 and Helldivers 2's success as online comp-stompers. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, FromSoft always put out at least thought-provoking and engrossing (if not downright brilliant) games in terms of mechanical refinement and gameplay.

But that stench of chasing trends is all over this project to my nose. Add to that Bloodborne's doomed console-exclusive future (which is a decision I still thoroughly cannot comprehend, because it sure as hell isn't driving console sales anymore, not even with the Remaster), and I start getting worried about the possibility that FromSoft will end up as just another name on the memorial wall of nuked game developers...

Bloodborne may be console exclusive on paper, but emulating it on PC is a trivial task.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Fair enough, but the fact that we have to circumvent official channels in order to do so says a lot about said official channels, y'know?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Oh no doubt, I hate exclusivity. The way Sony has treated the Bloodborne IP is a travesty, but par for the course for Japanese corps.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Feel like saying it's trivial seriously undermines the amount of struggling and effort that it's taken to get it to the point it's at. The Duskbloods might be different, but then it's just a whole different can of worms dealing with Nintendo's lawyers.

IDK, it doesn't take much to follow a guide.

I never disparaged the talented programmers and support folks that have figured it all out. I was mostly saying because so many talented folks have collaborated together, we can easily emulate these games.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

but emulating it on PC is a trivial task.

isn't the PS3 emuation absolute dumpsterfire because of the cell architecture? or did we pass that point already?

Emulating certain games isn't great, but running Demon's Souls is damn near flawless.

Edit: Bloodborne was on PS4.

I'm old and out of touch

I have had a lot of fun with seamless coop, but still by far most of my hours in FromSoft games has been offline single player. I want to be immersed in the world and the story. Not read the 50th Try finger but hole message, not fight with the UI because people leave messages on switches and not be invaded by 12 year old sweaty players invading and reminding me I still haven't gotten gud.

I think Nightreign will be cool, but just like Helldivers 2 I'll probably get bored within 30 hours and never play it again. And as with most online games, only the really fanatical fans will still be playing after a year or so. So if you do come back with zero skills and no memory of the game, you're in for a bad time. And once the game is dead, it's dead. No dusting off an 15 year old game and doing another run for fun, like I love to do with Souls games.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

I fully agree with every sentiment here

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm wondering if the game will have some offline capabilities. Sure would suck if the game just died completely once the servers are shut off

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Did I miss something? We already know Nightreign will have both single & multi player, did they announce a new game?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, an upcoming exclusive FS title that'll release on Switch 2 in 2026: The Duskbloods. You'll find trailers on YouTube easily

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Oh damn, thanks for the heads-up!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

ER was a lot of fun in multiplayer, especially with Seamless Coop, but I'm pretty wary of anything that's exclusively multiplayer. Not that it matters anyway because I never wanna give Nintendo another penny.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

I don't care so much that it's multiplayer, but that it's a Nintendo exclusive. This will be the first modern FromSoft game I'll skip.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

I knew this was gonna be the trajectory after Elden Ring got the general gaming public’s attention. Now mainstream success has gone to the Executives heads and we’ll only be getting watered down multiplayer and games as a service from FS.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

I've never really engaged with the multiplayer in any of the Fromsoft games. It's not why I pick them up.

That said, I'm open to waiting to learn more before deciding if I'll get it. Or maybe I'll have to see how Nightreign plays first.
