Soulslike - Discussion, News, Memes

This is a community for discussion, news, and memes pertaining to the video game sub-genre "soulslike".

Given Lemmy's size, the definition of soulslike may be treated relatively loosely. While games like the numerous FromSoft titles, the recent Star Wars Jedi games, Lies of P, Nioh and similar games should be the focus, games that incorporate soulslike elements - like Hollow Knight and Blasphemous, for example - may also be discussed here.

Basic Lemmy-quette applies. Additionally, since flairs don't exist yet, please do make sure to include a marker to denote what game your post is about in square brackets for clarity's sake. An example could be:

[BB] This enemy is so difficult!

or

[DS1] Anyone struggling with the gargoyles?

One way or another, we've all found our way to this truly magnificent genre of video games. We've all had our humble beginnings and first trial runs of games the genre has to offer. But how did we get here? Who introduced us to the genre? That's what I want to know from you!

My very first introduction to the genre was via PewDiePie (yuck) from like 2013 or so when he first played it on his channel. Didn't know the next thing about the genre or the game at all but wanted to give it a try since it looked fun and I was an impressionable teen. I remember bearing Taurus Demon and then getting stuck on Undead Burg, so I didn't really play a lot.

The other person that influenced me in giving the genre a try was probably my former breakdance teacher who's a huge fan of Bloodborne. I had a digital copy off PS+ and got some encouragement from him to give the game a try. It didn't click with until a couple years later, or rather I was too scared to progress because I knew of an upcoming jumpscare that I didn't want to experience (that doesn't exist btw), but yea, those were my two first instances of being introduced to the genre.

Were you introduced to the genre by someone in particular? How did you get to give it a try?

Holy shit, 1600h in any single game is mental. Ever feel burned out by it? How many runs is that?

I dont think I'm burned out of the game, but kinda burned out by the main communities I interacted with. I played a lot of coop with 2 other people, too. We would just run through each others games or run chalice dungeons on mics, like Bloodborne buddies, every single night, for months?

A lot of hours helping people defeat chalice dungeons for the platinum. Cursed Amygdala is ridiculously hard, and a lot of people are just rushing through the story dungeons for the plat.

But there are 26 weapons in the game and ive done at least one full play through with each, except the Amygdala arm. So one more to go. Each weapon is so unique, it is like a completely different game.

Since theres no respec in Bloodborne, I'd make different characters with different builds. I'd keep ones that I liked the design and drip, and then not really level them beyond 120-140 since that was the PvP meta cap. I have all ten slots filled with characters, each one has at least two full play throughs, I think 2 of them that are over ng7. Ive deleted several, I'd estimate at least 12, many of those with full play through.

I really like playing souls games from the beginning, it feels like the full experience. So I like starting over with a new character. I fire it up around Halloween every year. Idk if

except the Amygdala arm

That was the weapon with which I beat my first playthrough! I love that weapon, especially its design.

Any reason you haven't done a playthrough with it yet? Just haven't gotten around to it yet? Or any specific dislikes of that weapon?

Honestly just haven't gotten to it. Every weapon is viable, some of them aren't great and they tend to be the big clunky weapons like the kirkhammer. Although a pure bolt kirkhammer is pretty funny the way it massacres certain bosses.

I just never had a str+arc character until like last year when I got the game out around Halloween. I did a run through with the Tonitrus, which is way stronger than I ever thought even if the moveset is kinda mid. Then I did the boomhammer, similar move set and kinda underwhelming wrt it's damage and again kind of a one trick pony in its moveset. Amy arm would def be next but i haven't picked the game up since.
