You’ve got to add some ham and onion in there to make it a true grilled cheese.

[–] justaman123@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Do we have a new rollie pollie discourse evolving? Where you from that your grilled cheese needs ham and onion?

If you add anything other than cheese, it stops being a grilled cheese. You wouldn't call a tuna melt a grilled cheese sandwich, would you?

Don't get me wrong, I love melts, but I also call them by their proper name.

It’s a grilled cheese with tuna.

Anything other than cheese on a grilled cheese makes it a panini, not a grilled cheese.

We don't call it a grilled cheese in the UK. It would be a toastie, even if you added ham it would still be a toastie. A panini is something else I believe.

I think a toastie and a panini are very similar, but a panini typically uses a stiffer bread and the toastie is kind of sealed on the sides. A grilled cheese (US) is typically a cheese sandwich toasted in a pan, so kind of somewhere in between a toastie and a panini

It's 100% based on the bread. If I ask for a ham and cheese panini and get a regular toastie I'm gonna be upset

I can get behind these rules to be honest. I think panini would be a ciabatta or something like that.

I hadn’t realised that the American grilled cheese was basically a sandwich toasted and you’re quite right to point out toasties are sealed all around.

I wonder do Americans eat toasties. I’m reluctant to assume your country of origin.

If we do we don't call em that, what makes a toastie?

[–] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well you can just fuck right off.

What aren’t you a fan of grilled cheeses?

[–] LowKeyLooker@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah and what you’ve described is a grilled ham and cheese sandwich with onions

[–] SantasMagicalComfort@piefed.world 0 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Do you get off on policing what people call their sandwiches and gatekeeping the ingredients in a sandwich you’ll never eat?

[–] LowKeyLooker@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

you were literally gate keeping grilled cheese sandwiches with your ham and cheese comment so I do enjoy it in this case yeah

I will think of you when I make my next grilled cheese without ham and onions

Then again when I make one with ham and onions to see if it’s worth the fuss but that’s the last time damn it

You’ll think of me again that night and from time to time after that as well.

[–] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sounds good it’s your life so I’m not going to tell you how to live it.

[–] 0ops@piefed.zip 2 points 1 day ago

A little bit of garlic powder and it's like eating grilled cheese and garlic bread at the same time 🤤
