He details that his depression reached the point where his wife would not let him come home and that he lived in his parents’ basement in York.

Could be a shitty wife. Could be a husband who burned up any compassion she had years before.

I don't know enough about her to judge her motivation.

Honestly, given his personality changes, I would not be surprised to hear that he's become verbally or possibly even physically abusive at home.
