On one hand I'm glad this is actually going to get some attention and answers.

On the other hand, I'm pissed that 1) it has to be a rich private citizen to get it done, and 2) this story didn't even make it a whole day in the news cycle because a cut-and-dry murder of a fascist was--and still is--more important.

How much could an autopsy really cost?

Are you assuming or do you know? Do coroner surgeons really get paid that much for a few hours work? How many tests are performed?

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 12 points 8 months ago

Bro, it's healthcare. The coroners aren't getting paid that, the hospital is. And yes, a Google search puts it between free (for criminal cases the state is pursuing) to a few thousand dollars for private autopsies.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 9 points 8 months ago

$3000-$10,000, depending on tests required, but in this case they would only be interested in evidence of defensive wounds or trauma caused by someone else.

I found a place in Colorado that does private autopsies for the entire continental US: https://www.postmortempath.com/

I verified they're a real business. Here's an excerpt from their FAQ:

How much does an autopsy cost?

A private autopsy generally runs between $3000 to $5000, depending on the company that you use and how many additional tests and procedures you wish to be performed.

Gosh, if only we had some sort of object at our fingertips that would let us look up information like that in an instant… perhaps something that could even let us look at several different sources to compare information…

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 1 points 8 months ago

Because the internet said so? I can't imagine it costing anything else.

There's always money in the autopsy stand

[–] apenstaartje@lemmy.cafe 9 points 8 months ago

I’d rather have a banana

Can we not do the Reddit thing where it's a race to post the funniest comment on even the heaviest topics, drowning out serious discussions?

[–] Ascrod@midwest.social 5 points 8 months ago

Dumb jokes are my coping mechanism for the ever-growing darkness that is slowly consuming my country and my soul.

[–] apenstaartje@lemmy.cafe 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Can we not do the thing where we complain about innocent comments that annoy us just to get our domaine instead of just blocking the user and never having to see it again?

[–] RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com -1 points 8 months ago (2 children)

"A little bit of litter is no big deal; who cares if we make a shared space worse?"

[–] apenstaartje@lemmy.cafe 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

You’re making the shared space worse.

[–] RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com -1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

As I said to the other user:

Some people dislike litter more than they dislike people pointing out litter, and some feel the opposite. You are in the latter category.

[–] apenstaartje@lemmy.cafe 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Let me point out your littering.

[–] RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

It's definitely a stance to take, saying that complaining about anything is awful. It's not a very sensible stance, but you're welcome to it.

[–] apenstaartje@lemmy.cafe 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

You are an amazing ventriloquist

[–] RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com -1 points 8 months ago

Shh. The adults are speaking. Go play with your toys.

[–] GeeDubHayduke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Gotta say, i prefer a South Park reference to your whining about said reference.

...who's really stinking up the joint, in this scenario?

[–] RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com -1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

You.

You're making a personal attack out of me asking someone not to Reddit our Lemmy.

[–] GeeDubHayduke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 8 months ago (1 children)

"Our" lemmy. And yet, you don't speak for me. Interesting.

[–] RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Oh, you don't know what "our" means? Can't say I'm surprised.

[–] GeeDubHayduke@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 8 months ago

Who was whining about personal attacks? Was it me? No, wait! That was you! That hypocrisy fits you quite well, actually.

[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 1 points 8 months ago

But it's so le funny and gets updoots

[–] slaneesh_is_right@lemmy.org 10 points 8 months ago (3 children)

Is an autopsy independent? I have no idea how that even works, but i wouldn't trust it at all if the police has any way to get their fat fingers in between the autopsy and the results.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 8 months ago

People fund independent autopsies for exactly this reason.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 8 points 8 months ago (1 children)

It's done by an independent person with no connection to any branch of government or police.

[–] RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Who is elected, and typically runs with the support of a political party.

[–] Tinidril@midwest.social 3 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Yes the government does an autopsy and your concerns absolutely apply. However, the family is free to do a followup autopsy with whomever they wish. That's what this funding is for.

[–] RedditRefugee69@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 8 months ago

You assume they're talking about the independent one.

[–] FerretyFever0@fedia.io 2 points 8 months ago

I believe it is.
