JD Vance dying sounds good until you consider he'll be replaced by Mike Johnson.

I was curious how far down the line of succession you would have to go to find someone who would not be a catastrophically bad president. 11 positions down is the Secretary of Labor, Lori Chavez-DeRemer. She's a Hispanic woman who was one of 6 Republican house members who signed a pledge to respect the results of the 2024 election, the only Republican cosponsor of a pro- union bill, and opposes a national Bank on abortion or IVF. Far from Ideal but light years better than the rest of the fascists on the list

It would be nigh impossible for that outcome though. If trump dies, Vance assumes the role but then selects a new VP. This new VP is now first in line and Johnson hasn't moved up at all. It would take the synchronized deaths of all those others in line ahead of Lori Chavez-DeRemer for her to get the position. This is a known possibility so they generally keep people separated to some degree. That way if someone wants to plot a mass assassination to clear the line, it's much more difficult. They couldn't just try to bomb one building or something.

I’m an atheist but on Inauguration Day I was praying. Then they moved it inside suddenly. All those billionaire butt kissers were there too…

But seriously, that was a potential dream scenario for… uh… someone…

[–] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

True, but most if not all of those positions need congressional approval of the next person holding the position. It doesn't transfer automatically. The approval process can drag on for months. I think one or two are still "acting" secretaries under Trump.

[–] blazeknave@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So how did she get a cabinet level position? I'm honestly confused

[–] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Normally I would never say a woman slept her way to the top, but this is Trump we are talking about. None of these people legitimately earned their cabinet positions.

just gather them all and let a single mortar shell loose

[–] Tolookah@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Vance can pick anyone to be his VP I believe, so it likely wouldn't be Johnson

They're referring to the succession in an emergency. After that i think is speaker pro tempore

Yeah, I think they are just pointing in the line of succession doesn't do much if the VP was chosen by the president. We only made it 4 electiona before the 12th amendment was made and killed any hopes that the line of succession would be useful and Washingtons hopes that we wouldn't become a 2 party system were completely dashed.

Without the 12th Amendment I have no idea who would be president right now. Biden would have never been Vice President and such likely would have never been President. Harris the same. But the President would likely have an obstacle at all times in the Senate as the only way to get both the President and Vice President elected for the same "party" they would have to have 2 candidates beat 1 of another party, splitting the vote of their own party. In today's media age, it would be really hard to have gotten that done.

If there is an opening in the VP spot, the President nominates a new VP. But that VP still has to be confirmed by both houses of Congress before he can be sworn in.

The only way Johnson becomes president is if a) Trump dies, Vance nominates him, and Congress confirms it, or b) both Trump and Vance kick the bucket at the same time which automatically puts Johnson in the White House.
