Can some investor pour 100 million or something into fairphone so the phones actually become good?

[–] JohnDClay@sh.itjust.works 53 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

If it's your average investor, they'll want a return, which will make fair phone stop being ethical.

[–] FundMECFS@slrpnk.net 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Isn’t fair phone a for profit company? If it is, doesn’t change much.

If it is a non-profit, then that’s even better, lets get some philanthropist on it.

[–] theonlytruescotsman@sh.itjust.works 19 points 2 years ago (1 children)

For profit and for infinitely exponentially increasing profit are two different business types.

[–] cybersin@lemm.ee 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

There are always exceptions to the rule, but the former usually turns into the latter given enough time.

[–] theonlytruescotsman@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Only if outside investment is involved. You can survive as a business by just doing good business for quite a while.

Other than being a bit thick, the Fairphone 5 is actually a very good phone.

[–] myfavouritename@beehaw.org 3 points 2 years ago

Totally agree. I prefer my Fairphone to nearly any other phone I've owned.

You have one? I've heard bad things about software compatibility.

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yes. Although I don't know what you mean with "software comparability".

I am still on the stock Android it comes with, which works fine but is still infested with Google stuff. I am not sure about the state of alternative ROMs, but I think it is not bad given how relatively new the hardware is. Personally I plan to switch to PostmarketOS or Mobian once that support matures a bit, but it seems to be almost there now.

[–] JohnDClay@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Sorry meant compatibility, thanks for the response. Bluetooth and audio has been working okay?

[–] poVoq@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Yeah, no problems with Bluetooth and audio here. Wifi reception is probably the best I ever had on a smart-phone.

[–] cabbage@piefed.social 2 points 2 years ago

I'm also a FP5 user, FP3 before that. Never had any problems whatsoever.

Used /e/ for a while on FP3, that was mostly fine but some annoyances like the camera being less good. So I switched back to stock android. Might try /e/ again soon though.

I haven't had any problems with apps, audio, bluetooth, anything.

It takes a lot of work and time to build smartphones.

The Pixel and the iPhone weren’t built overnight.

[–] CareHare@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 years ago (3 children)

I bought one a couple of years ago, still use it. It's not that bad, just don't expect any crazy fluff. It's the compromise one makes for a sustainable future. Cheaper than most flagships.

[–] cm0002@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Cheaper than most flagships.

Yea, because It's not a flagship, it's got a crap proc that even the Tensor 2 beats. The Tensor 2 proc that has been widely regarded as the worst processor.

And 6 GB RAM on the base model? What‽ What year is this‽

You have to really prioritize the Fairphone mission and accept all the compromises you have to make

[–] CareHare@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

prioritize the Fairphone mission

As if 10 years ago we didn't do just fine with phones like the fairphone 4. It's just ridiculous to me that you mock its processor like it's not even a functional phone.

You won't be more content with your life by always reaching for more. It's a capitalistic and consumer mindset. Bound to fail in due time.

What good is a 124 GB RAM phone when the world is uninhabitable.

To play games on in your artificial environment / while you go through traffic in a new more air filtery car.

[–] cybersin@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago

I don't understand why people need so much processing power in a phone?

If you really need mobile processing power and can tolerate a larger device, even a cheap, old, shitty, crusty, used laptop would likely offer a better experience.

[–] FundMECFS@slrpnk.net 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I get that, but as someone on a currently near 8 year old phone, I’ve been told by friends the fairphone will barely last half that long :/.

[–] Scribbd@feddit.nl 5 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

How so? All parts are replacable with just a screwdriver. I do have to disclose I am replying to you on a FP5.

[–] FundMECFS@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

My friend told me in 3 years he had to buy 3 different batteries.

[–] Scribbd@feddit.nl 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That doesn't reflect my experience. But tough on your friend.

[–] FundMECFS@slrpnk.net 2 points 2 years ago

Glad to hear it isn’t always the case

[–] tibi@lemmy.world -1 points 2 years ago

It's a low end smartphone with mid range price and awful security. What's not to love?
