Would be nice to get Minecraft in Steam too

Edit: just came on to find all these replies. What I mean is that I abandoned Windows and only use macOS and Linux now. I prefer Bedrock over Java and there is no way I am aware of to play Bedrock except using something like the Android version which isn’t the same.

I just wish we could get a release on Steam in addition to the launcher and other ways we currently have. If nothing else than putting the launcher in Steam and a way to somehow use Proton to play it in Linux, at the very least.

Microsoft doesn’t want that to happen for obvious reasons, so this won’t ever happen.

[–] LostWanderer@fedia.io 10 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Games not on Valve's platform and are hosted elsewhere is a good thing! So that way if Steam even collapses for whatever reason...Not all games are lost! Not every game needs to be on Steam.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 5 points 2 weeks ago

God damnit! How am I going to play RuneScape now that it's on steam! It's on steam so it can't possibly be available anywhere else!(I'm just taking the piss. I agree with where you're coming from)

[–] TheSambassador@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Sure, but a game can be on multiple platforms at once...

[–] LostWanderer@fedia.io 4 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Honestly, I don't see the point of adding Minecraft to Steam. As it already exists on so many platforms; I don't see Microsoft or Mojang being interested in sharing a revenue cut with Valve for every sale. As they mainly distribute Minecraft from their website and support several computer OS, they have the most to gain from following KISS in this instance.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

Honestly, I don't see the point of adding Minecraft to Steam.

Bedrock on Linux. Java edition doesn't have raytracing.

Edit: also cloudsave.

[–] LostWanderer@fedia.io 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That can be fixed by pressuring Mojang to implement those changes. It doesn't have to be on Steam to recieve those upgrades, community action and pressure are necessary to manifest those outcomes. Its less of a pipe dream than wishing for the impossible.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If releasing on Steam and let Proton do the work of running on linux is much more impossible than to ask them to write the program again but this time for linux, i'm not sure what to say.

[–] LostWanderer@fedia.io 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Its not even a rewrite that is required, Java Minecraft already runs fine on Linux, C++ programs can as well. The issue is it would Mojang needs a reason to adapt the Bedrock version of Minecraft so that it will run with no issues on Linux. To add a cloud save functionality to the game there, if you want that, advocate for the change. Don't ask for them to add Minecraft to Steam, be sensible about it.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Huh? What's so insensible about that? If Minecraft Dungeon 1 and 2 can be release on Steam, i'm not sure what so insensible to ask for a bedrock edition to be release on Steam as well. Certainly not as insensible as to ask them to add a team just to make sure the native linux version run well.

[–] LostWanderer@fedia.io 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If you really think about it, Minecraft is one of their biggest cash cows (mainly microtransactions after the initial sale, especially in the case of Bedrock), they would prefer to keep all that revenue. Doing as only as little profit cuts caused by selling through other storefronts as possible. Given that Minecraft and Mojang are household names, that everyone knows about this game, and where to get it...Why put it on Steam? There is no benefit for them to do this, or they would've a long time ago as part of a corporate strategy. Smaller side games like Minecraft Dungeons like 1 or 2, like that's not a big deal for them. There isn't really reoccurring money to be made there for them aside from a one time sale. Feels like a profit by volume of sales situation to me.

Person on the web, it is not as hard for them to make modifications to the existing code which can already run on Linux with modifications, C++ games can easily run on Linux with modifications. It doesn't take a complete code re-write to do this.

You can literally have several codebases with minor changes made for each platform. They clearly have done this for Java, they know there is a fan base on Linux for this game. There is an incentive for them to make the adjustments if enough people speak up. Like, I dunno why you are so stuck on this pipe dream for Minecraft on Steam as if it is the only way forward. But, you can hold on to it if you wish, dearie.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

You know minecraft is their cashcow not because of the sales but because of the mtx right? Like, putting it on steam will open up an even bigger userbase. Literally every other storefront except windows store(i'm assuming) take the cut and they're happy to sell it on there, the excuse of "keeping their revenue" just doesn't really fly.

Like, i don't really care about where they put it as long as there's a linux version of bedrock, but then from experience native linux version tend to be sidelined often, so putting it on Steam is the quickest shortcut every dev can take to port their game to linux. Not sure why you're so dead set against this idea but hey it seems like you're the expert of the subject, maybe that give you the right to be condescending about it.

[–] LostWanderer@fedia.io 1 points 2 weeks ago

You need to convince both Microsoft and Mojang of what you want, present your case to them about getting Minecraft on Steam. Particularly when a good case is stated to them on the matter, an audience shows up and makes it clear there is a return on investment. shrugs Replying here doesn't really matter, unless you go to the Minecraft Forums and present your opinion, see what happens. That would be the most productive thing to do at this stage, as clearly you are convinced enough to stick with this idea.

I'm just a dude on the internet sharing his opinion that isn't based on pure facts. Based on casual observations (I since edited my initial reply about the cash cow nature as you were right...). I feel they don't care about Steam enough to put it on there as there have been no moves on their part to indicate any interest in years. I am no means an expert, I don't feel like I am being particularly condescending either. It just feels more likely to get a reworked version of Bedrock Minecraft that runs on all 3 platforms like Java currently does. It would essentially achieve the same aim and would be more likely to be realized. But, eh, it doesn't matter what I think unless I do the same. Stating my own case on the Minecraft Forums.

[–] TheSambassador@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Idk, I visited my niece and nephew who love Minecraft. I came with my Steam Deck, and the recommended way to run Minecraft was through some 3rd party launcher that wasn't officially Minecraft. It worked fine, but I kinda would have preferred an "official" pathway to running it there.

[–] LostWanderer@fedia.io 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, I mean the only problem with the Steam Deck is that Steam OS (which is based on Arch) doesn't allow for package layering, otherwise you'd be able to use the official launcher which is on the AUR. I have no idea why they still haven't promoted that one to the extra repo yet. Given that Minecraft has been out for donkeys years now...There is clearly no incentive for them to launch it on Steam. They are big enough that they are fine without Steam for Minecraft.

[–] mschae@discuss.mschae23.de 8 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Minecraft in Steam would be a downgrade in every way (Minecraft already has no DRM, lets you freely download and play old versions, doesn't require the official launcher to start, is easily modded, and so on).

[–] rtxn@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

I don't see how Steam would make any difference.

  • Implementing any kind of DRM is the game developer's prerogative.
  • Allowing other versions is possible, again, at the developer's convenience.
  • No other launcher needed besides Steam (and Steam is very far from being only a launcher)
  • Steam Workshop (because fuck Forge)

The only downside I can see is that Steam doesn't have a way to maintain multiple instances of the same game.

[–] mschae@discuss.mschae23.de 8 points 2 weeks ago

Implementing any kind of DRM is the game developer's prerogative.

Yes, sure, but Steam encourages the use of the DRM included in the Steamworks API.

If Minecraft could only be downloaded through Steam, that would also be a step back insofar that right now, Mojang will let you download the game without any authentication at all. Changing this would be quite inconvenient for mod developers.

Allowing other versions is possible, again, at the developer's convenience.

How? With branches / betas? There are a limit to those, and I'm pretty sure Minecraft exceeds them already. And as you already mentioned, you couldn't use multiple versions at the same time. The only alternative (that I know of), the download_depot method, is far from user-friendly.

No other launcher needed besides Steam (and Steam is very far from being only a launcher)

That would reduce the number of launchers required from 1 to… 1. 🙃

Steam Workshop

The workshop is integrated into Steam and can only be used there (can't download the files manually, as far as I know). It's also way too simple for the modding needs Minecraft has (with its multiple versions, dependencies or breakage between mods, modpacks…).

It would also require Mojang to write their own mod loader, which would likely be too limiting for most mod developers. (And Forge is not the only mod loader out there. There are far better ones, like Fabric.)

There's just no point to doing this. You'd replace a system that works very well with one that doesn't. Steam generally works pretty well for managing games, but I don't believe there would be any improvement if Mojang were to switch to it for Minecraft.

[–] Armok_the_bunny@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The Steam Workshop wouldn't help with the Forge problem, just for the record.

[–] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I am assuming they mean CurseForge, which yeah, I don't like CurseForge either.

[–] Armok_the_bunny@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Maybe, but I doubt it, just on the grounds that the Forge modloader has its share of controversy.

[–] GunValkyrie@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

They could still do all that on steam.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Why not just add it as a non Steam game? Or do you mean for like multiplayer stuff with Steam friends? Either way it should work.

[–] bigmclargehuge@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 weeks ago

Prism launcher. S-tier Mc launcher

[–] cybernihongo@reddthat.com 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Microsoft account DRM isn't enough for you?

[–] rtxn@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

Ah yes, the famous DRM.

Some launchers allow you to play fully offline, but only after you've authenticated and started the game at least once with a real Microsoft account. The launcher has a sophisticated validation mechanism to ensure this: a single boolean value stored in a JSON file. Set that to true and you're good to go.

[–] cybernihongo@reddthat.com 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

And yet the Microsoft account migration which can be easily defeated by a JSON file according to you has attracted a class action lawsuit. Curious. Almost as if circumventing it is not my point.

[–] atopi@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 weeks ago

Do you know what the lawsuit is about? Or what drm is?

[–] whimsy@lemmy.zip 0 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

I think Prism launcher actually disabled this in the newer versions? Please correct me if I'm wrong because I really don't wanna give microsoft any more money

[–] cybernihongo@reddthat.com 1 points 2 weeks ago

Official Prism requires you to sign in with a Microsoft account at least once. But since Prism is open source, you can also download unofficial builds with no Microsoft anything whatsoever.

[–] cybernihongo@reddthat.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

The unofficial Minecraft Pocket Edition Launcher you seem to have alluded to in your edit is pretty nice, and feels almost as if it's a native port of Bedrock to Linux. All the Google and Android stuff is abstracted away.

Minecraft already has too much big tech influence on it with Microsoft, let's not add Valve's grubby fingers into the pie now, shall we?
