The last thing I watched in theaters was a reshowing of the Fellowship of the Ring. Everything else is on a buddy's Plex server. Fuck the movies I ain't paying 50 dollars for sticky floors and shitty snacks. I can do both of those at home.
Do you live in the sticks or what? Tickets are $15 and every theater I've been to since COVID has been clean.
You're right. They're including multiple tickets, snacks, etc., methinks. But, also, $15 is too high for the experience offered, IMO.
I'm not sure I agree, to get that same experience at home I'd need a 6-figure purpose-built room with a bluray copy of each movie so $15 once a month isn't too bad.
Most people are happy enough streaming low bitrates on their 55" Walmart TV with a $100 soundbar so it's definitely not an experience for everyone but I'd consider $10/hour is pretty good rate. I value home entertainment closer to $1/hour
Its not just the price of the theater. The cost of living and adulthood responsibilities also make it hard to get to the movies in the first place. I specifically need to get a baby sitter unless my wife or I are staying home too. Its just not in the cards anymore.
I’m with you. I feel a bit bad because my husband loves (or loved) the experience of going to the movies, whereas I couldn’t care less and would prefer my couch. But we used to go because he enjoyed it, and it was nice to avoid spoilers for big things. Nowadays between having kids and the overall experience of movie-going having completely gone down the shitter and more expensive to boot, we don’t go anymore. And I don’t really miss it. He goes out sometimes with his buddies to see a movie, and I’ll tell him if there’s something he has to wait to see with me (Dune is the only thing recently).
I keep thinking some movie will come along that will make me want to go again. The only one that comes to mind is Spaceballs 2, because I expect the audience to be completely into it. But, even then, I'll probably just wait.
I took my kid and his friend to see Deadpool, the first one. That was my last time for me.
They could offer a better experience, something that would draw me, but they're not even close to matching what I have at home for now. And, maybe they couldn't do it profitably anymore, I don't know.
Twenty years from now, movie theaters will only be left in big cities, that have enough people nearby to support them. But, even then, they'll need to change what they do.

Haskins and AMC aren't showing indie films all day. The one film buff theater in my town I know of that plays off the wall shit is a dine in, has a 70mm projector, and is expensive as fuck. I consistently have an empty bank account. I am not going to the movies.

It was more like "Wow! You watch your shit on Plex!?" (I literally use Plex to watch old trek and Jujutsu Kaizen) "films are gonna die because YOU aren't out at indie film festivals!" Which doesnt make much sense. Thats hardly much to go off of when a lot of indie films are shown at specific theaters like the single one in my town thats hosts 70mm film. Its also a dine in and expensive. So no. I can't do that much to support indie film in my own life. I'm broke.
Probably why I didn't say that then, huh? Neither did I suggest you go beyond your fiscal means. But if new ideas in media is something you want, which you said, then the only way that happens is with people making a point to support it how they can outside the mainstream. You sticking solely to your home media server does nothing of use for the people making the content you're demanding.
Well its happening, seems people will continue to create whether I can afford to participate or not. Interesting how that works. Like I'm not the only person in the world so attacking me specifically for not going but still saying hey maybe we should have new shit, is just ridiculous lmao but k feel better or whatever
I have some stuff rattling around but I don't think people would interested in what boils down to wikipedia articles, you can't make me write about character grown or arcs
Team up with someone who just wants to write characters and you two together will topple the sky.
just keep posting to writing prompts till I have enough for a book, who needs ai when I can coast off of free labour, then again I'm not sure I could be a judge on what makes a good story
