Ugh my buddy used to do shit like this when we were younger, he'd get us on the highway and the immediately start doing 80 in the fast lane. No buddy we are not racing your base model honda civic against my base model chevy prism.

*Passing lane

There is no "fast lane"

[–] anas@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago

This is country dependent.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

on a two or four lane highway, sure. on anything six lanes or larger, there definitely is.

[–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago) (1 children)

No, there is only one regular lane in each direction. And if you want to pass you take the second land. The third lane is to pass someone who is passing someone. The forth lane is to pass someone who is passing someone who is passing someone. And so further.

If there are six lanes, the sixt lane is to pass someone who is passing someone who is passing someone who is passing someone who is passing someone who is driving in the regular lane.

The speed does not matter.

Which functionally turns the innermost lane into the fast lane. Y'all are whinging about semantics.

Anything above 3 lanes is no longer a highway, it's a mental illness

We passed 'em! Stop this thing!

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Y'all realize they count all the lanes, not just the ones going one direction right? A 3 lane highway is 1 lane each direction and a suicide lane.

[–] VibeSurgeon@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I guess technically it can be a 2+1 highway if you so will, but true.

Still, anything above 4 lanes is dangerously close to mental illness territory

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

lord give me the confidence of a man from a town with a population of 500

[–] VibeSurgeon@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm not sure what the implication here is to be honest - am I supposed to be the small town man in this scenario?

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world -1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (2 children)

yes. calling more than two lanes each direction being "mental illness" screams "i have never been in a crowd"

[–] alsimoneau@lemmy.ca 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

If there is that much traffic there should be a train line instead.

While I agree in general, there's still the last bit from the station to home. I can only get a hundred pounds of kitty litter on my trike. If I need to haul more, I need an (hopefully electric) automobile. I just finished buying everything for a project I've been designing for a few years. If I had taken public transit, it would have taken 3 or 4 trips.

[–] VibeSurgeon@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago

Right. So I live in an apartment in the capital of my country, where transit moves far more people than the highways ever does.

While we're being derogatory, your opinion is incredibly American

[–] wieson@feddit.org 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)
  1. who is they. They don't count like that here
  2. if you count like that, your previous point doesn't stand. In a three lane (1 direction) system you have two passing lanes. Easy. You still return as much to the right (or outside) as possible and sensible under the way you're driving. For example return to middle of you're still cruising faster than the lorries in the rightmost (or outermost) lane.
[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

they is the uniform vehicular code. they do count like that where you are, you just don't pay attention

[–] wieson@feddit.org 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Wrong again. They are not where I am.
It is the Richtlinien für die Anlage von Autobahnen (RAA)

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 9 hours ago

Which has to comply to a version of the uniform vehicular code if citizens of your country are going to be able to use their extant drivers licenses internationally.

[–] infinitesunrise@slrpnk.net 3 points 2 days ago

True, good correction.
