nobody’s boot is on your neck.

lol, this is fucking wild for you to be telling people without knowing anything about their situation.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world -3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

oh and what situation is that?

I've interacted with folks here who told me their situation, and often it was just a series of their own poor life-choices. like this guy who told me he was oppressed because he wanted to be a music producer and AI stole his job... right buddy, right. it's that AI stole your job and not that you wanted to enter a professor where nobody makes any money... and rather than going and learning a useful skill you just sit around whining on the internet how your life is unfair if only the 'revolution' would come you'll be a successful music producer...

Yeah man, clearly it's 'the boot on my neck' that I am not a successful movie star! I was the star actor in my high school drama club! Clearly it was facism that stopped be from being a Hollywood movie star!

except no, i wasn't that stupid. I went to college, studied useful things, and built myself up through working part time gigs and then got a full time job and 20 years later I'm comfortable because of... making good choices and not wasting my life chasing 'dreams'. pretty much like... most everyone I know who didn't have social connections or rich parents...

I went to college, studied useful things

Maybe also study how society works. Not everybody can follow your lead.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

litereally everybody? no, they can't.

but most people can become nurses or re-train to find jobs that pay well and are in high demand. it's fine if they don't want to do that, but the opportunity is there. the barriers to economic opportunity aren't as high as people on this site would like to believe, but they are more interested in writing novels about how awful their lives are and how everything is hopeless than doing anything pragmatic to improve their situation. or they are tech heads with big incomes who are upset they can't afford shiny new toys like gaming PCs because of data centers

[–] plyth@feddit.org 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

If most people are nurses people will be desperate for a nurse job and wages will be as low as they can get.

Anybody can become rich but not everybody.

The trick is to make it easier for clever people to get a better job than it is for them to improve society as a whole. Resources can either go into boats and mansions, or healthcare for all.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

yeah, that's how the economy works. demand and supply.

that's what's going on in tech right now, too many people chasing too few jobs.

there are no guarantees in life, so you have to adapt.

and a lot of people would be a lot richer if they had better economic habits.

define improving society? like a greater GDP? a greater per capital income? etc. also realize that your definition of 'better society' likely has nothing to do with someone else's.

healthcare for all sounds good on paper, but how can it be achieved if we already have a medical system that can't meet the needs of current demands? if we had medical for all and were able to provide decent service for all, we'd likely need to quadruple the number of healthcare workers...

it's easy to have high minded ideals about this stuff, it's much harder and murkier to get into the real world details and the real world consequences of 'improvement' in society.

if you passed medicare for all tomorrow, the medical system would collapse because it wouldn't be able to meet the demand. people would be waiting years for basic checkups, instead of months they wait now. my PCP books appointments six months in advance.

True, but society can be structured in a way that life is not 3 missed payments away from an existential crisis.

were able to provide decent service for all, we’d likely need to quadruple the number of healthcare workers

I think it takes much less but if only a quarter of the citizens get decent service then that's not a good society.

it’s much harder and murkier to get into the real world details and the real world consequences of ‘improvement’ in society.

True. That's why the best have to think about it, instead of how to deny health insurance claims to increase quarterly profits.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

society is already structured that way.

but you can't convince people who don't believe it isn't, that it is, because they are retards who lack basic life-skills and refuse to learn them.

what you want is a fool-proof society, and well, since most people are fools, that's never going to work.

no amount of universal anything will help the woman I saw this morning who was 60lbs overweight and ordered 4 pumps of syrup in her extra large latte. she's fucking herself far harder than any 'society' could.

[–] plyth@feddit.org 1 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Maybe more individual connections. If life is good, a suggar rush doesn't have to offer the same fulfillment.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (1 children)

if her 200K+ salary isn't a good life? then what is?

maybe it's not about good life, maybe it's just that she doesn't give a fuck about health or fulfillment, and does what feels good to her in the moment and has and will forever live her life that way, and she will tell the doctor to fuck off when he tells her she has to lose weight or face serious illnesses.

some people are just shit people their entire lives, by their own active choices. here on lemmy, though, you're only allowed to be guilty of that if you vote republican or something. i wonder if the lady in the coffee line is democrat or republican, and how she would be a 'suffering from the oppression of the system' in one case, and 'deserving of her misery' in the other?

[–] plyth@feddit.org 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

if her 200K+ salary isn’t a good life? then what is?

A life that doesn't need the suggar rush.

and does what feels good to her in the moment

That's likely how she lives. The structure of society determines if she grew up longing for suggar or if she longed for a walk. A good society can make up for plenty of resources.

democrat or republican, and how she would be a ‘suffering from the oppression of the system’ in one case, and ‘deserving of her misery’ in the other

That's the usual team thinking. If we wouldn't leave the media to the elite we should have more nuanced conversations.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

'nothing is anyone's fault, we are all victims of society/media elite. nobody can make their own choices'

Does that also apply to you? are you nothing more than a hapless victim? are the 'media elite' forcing you to write these comments on lemmy? or is that the 'structure of society' that forces you to type internet comments?

maybe you're just a bot though.

[–] plyth@feddit.org 1 points 56 minutes ago

Most of what I write is society. I rarely have an original thought.
