Hanging with extended family some this weekend and a MAGA cousin I usually avoid interacting with mentioned how "neuroplasticity" is what enables Republicans to hold two contradicting positions at once. I am in awe at how simple and stupid his solution is to the cognitive dissonance. Don't try to resolve it, just slap a multi-syllable science word on it and be proud of it.

I wonder which influencer fed him that line

The funny thing about that is that there has been one study that shows conservatives (especially conservative men) have an enlarged amygdala compared to other people, the amygdala being the part of the brain that handles primitive responses, namely fear driven responses.

And there's been another study that linked brain damage to having conservative, rigid views. Which explains all the right wing MMA fighters and rugby players.

It is said that the feeling of disgust is stronger among conservatives, which probably explains a lot.

also people with mental illnesses like schizophrenia leans conservative.

That's some great doublethink going on there.

First thing to my mind. It's near word for word with neuroplasticity bolted on.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

Wouldn't it be the opposite?

[–] phx@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Maybe they think that neuroplasticity comes from excess microplastics in the brain ..

[–] Leviathan@fedinsfw.app 1 points 2 days ago

Sounds like a Huberman/Rogan convo.

Polymers like oobleck. They got mush in their head that cracks when you hit it with a single hard thought.

One of the most important things a therapist ever told me was “contradictions are allowed to exist”. My degree is in mathematics so this was genuinely a controversial statement and it took me a while to actually internalize it. While I think the cousin in question is a dumbass cause MAGA, he’s actually onto something.
