Are you ready for a super unpopular opinion? No holds barred? You asked for it:

Dogs suck. I don't like them. Glad if you do, please enjoy. But they slobber, shed, smell and are generally mostly a nuisence. They can be fun for brief periods, but they're way more work and hassle than they're worth. My brother is thinking of getting a big dog and I hope he doesn't because it would make me reluctant to spend a weekend at his place. I can't believe the number of people who seriously admit to loving their dogs more than their kids. I can't believe people consider themselves their pet's "parent". I can't believe how forcefully the online community backlashes to the idea of kids or judgemental of "ill-mannered" and neurodiverse kids, yet will happily say "it is never a dog's" fault, no matter how "bad" the dog is.

Cats can sometimes be ok, if they're not noisy and don't shed too much. But generally having animals in the house isn't great at all.

Thank you for your attention. Future Lemmings will look back at my comment history from unrelated threads and judge me for this, even though I've posted in the context of the current thread.

I think you pissed off Mr. Scruff lmao. He copied your comment word for word, just replaced dogs with kids.

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 4 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks for the heads up. How hilariously unoriginal and surprising to get so upset by my comment. I wish him and his dogs a whole load of child-free happiness.

I dunno', I think you're both right, with the caveat of untrained dogs/kids, IMO. In either case, there is a WORLD of difference between one that listens when told to go play outside and one that will draw on the walls with crayon or piss the moment you look away.

It's the same kind of people that have terrible dogs and terrible children.

In either case, a well kept/trained dog/child can be pretty solid company. Though usually a little harder to entertain a child without sticking them to a screen.

Dogs are dope in the same way human babies are dope. Either one and your totally free life is over though.

with a baby you spend significantly more money.time and investments. and have to still deal with them post-hs, post college(what if they cant find a job or need to live with you suddenly, or that they refuse to contribute), while dogs dont live that long. i think a child is worst to have in a way.

only way a dog is worst, if have too many, or one that is more than you can handle that takes over your life.

I kind of agree. I like pics and vids of dogs, but actually being around them is kind of gross and scary. Cats are more my speed. They clean themselves. They don't need to be taken outside just to take a shit. They usually don't smell. They sleep a lot and generally just act really chill. I haven't had a cat jump and bark (or whatever the cat equivalent would be) at me in the way that dogs do. I feel like I have an understanding with cats.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Way too many people don't treat their dogs right (or just deliberately get a breed that's aggressive towards strangers) and end up with the dog equivalent of a drunk hooligan. I'm sort of alright with friendly dogs, but fuck all those people with aggressive ones.

Yeah, well said. I agree with you on that

Want an even less popular opinion? A good portion of the reason people love their dogs so fiercely is because they are such a pain in the ass. It is basic cognitive dissonance: we love what we suffer for, like sororities and fraternities (because of the hazing etc.), military units (because of the misery, starting with boot camp), orthodox/intense religions (because of the constant self-denial and public embarrassment of living the rules), etc. Same with dogs.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 7 hours ago

i think the real main reason is looks, alot of people get dogs for thier looks, and not for what thier breed is designed to do. some owners dont like hearing that at all. and yes the popular ones always ends up in shelters or abandoned.

Nah, it’s because they believe that dogs are men’s best friends and because dogs are cute to hundreds of millions of people

[–] LurkingLuddite@piefed.social 1 points 18 hours ago

That's not cognitive dissonance. That's trauma bonding.

[–] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 5 points 22 hours ago

All the upvotes to you. I too hate dogs. I mentioned at r/unpopularopinion that I allow my dislike of dogs to carry into my playing of Red Dead Redemption and they all lost their shit.

I really don't care for dogs either, we had a choreographer once bring her German shepherd to rehearsal. The dog was decently well behaved and sat in the corner and played with a squeaky toy but sometimes it would fart and it would be awful.

[–] ericatty@infosec.pub 3 points 16 hours ago

Possible thought, choreographer brought dog to have someone to blame their own farts on? Dog was dying too with it's sensitive nose, but was too well-trained to let on.

Just had to travel via car with one. He's very large.

.....made me want a cat next time
