Quick reminder that starting September 2026, a silent update, nonconsensually pushed by Google, will block every Android app whose developer hasn't registered with Google, signed their contract, paid up, and handed over government ID: https://www.theregister.com/software/2025/10/29/keep-android-open-movement-fights-google-dev-requirement/1470903

Addition:

Several of these OSes, including Sailfish, FuriOS, Mobian, and postmarketOS are all pure Linux OSs. They're not derived from Android, but they can all run an Android VM or container, and so allow you to install and use Android apps.

  • Affordable
  • usable
  • no Android

Sadly we can only choose 2 of 3 :(

Add decent camera too, but make it unselectable.

I think camera is optional. This year I started to "cut off" features in other devices. Getting a New DAP felt weird without Spotify but still kinda fun (didn't expected that)

Last week I bought myself a toy camera (Kodak chamera with 1.3 Megapixel) and I love it!

Made me also realize how I most of the time i used my phone only to translate or scan/"backup" documents real quickly

Jolla ticks two boxes, interesting to see how usable it is when they start delivering

Well their previous phones have been usable, but barely apparently. Every discussion with users, it is just riddled with bugs and doesn't function as a phone often times. Though cheaper Samsung's often also don't function as a phone either I guess.

I thought about getting one for a while until a lot of users said they have to carry a second phone also, which defeats the purpose for me.

Like N9 back in the days. I hope I wonโ€™t need to carry two phones and Iโ€™m ready to cut off apps if they donโ€™t work, but thereโ€™s no excuse if phone calls donโ€™t function.

I think every phone of the above ticks two boxes, getting all 3 is the problem :/

I mean I can afford non of the phones.
