Quick note that tchncs.de is powered by donations - because i am struggling time wise and with properly prioritizing my tasks. With the current "main" mix of tchncs.de, clients and midijob among other distractions from #life and other small stuff, I have reached (or crossed) a limit of what i can handle in that regard. The recent addition of a minijob failed and has me reflecting and reconsidering on how and why i got here and what to do about it. Some of you might already have noticed that i might answer late or even never (without an additional ping from you) for some requests, which for sure is nothing personal nor on purpose.

Until now was simply happy with costs being covered with even some additional amount of cash arriving, which by itself is quite amazing! But since i cannot furtherly increase my workload to earn more, a small increase of donating users (please not increasing donations by already donating users) would already be quite impactful for a more stable and secure income-stream. It would have me less worried and stressed about other sources of income that could break away due to me being unable to live up to expectations or because a bigger client would go away for internal reasons.

If tchncs serves you well, is part of your life for a while now and only if you can afford and really want it, please consider doing a monthly microdonation. I try to be most transparent so you can properly decide whether if or how much you want to throw into the hat, at ➡️ https://tchncs.de/donate

If you are donating already, thank you so much! Without you, tchncs.de could not have gotten this far, not even close to where its at now. ❤️

...also thanks @cronenthal, for your previous post

This article sounds interesting: https://jeena.net/lemmy-switch-to-piefed

In case someone doesn’t see which community I’m posting in: I mean this server, not users going anywhere else.

Hi,

[edit: working now, problem solved.]

~~I wanted to block an instance from appearing in my feed, but it doesn't work.

The "block user" and "block community" fields offer search results when i type something in the box, and i can select a result that gets added.

But typing into the "block instance" field does nothing, no search results pop up, and even if i enter the exact name, i can't just add it with enter.~~

Trying to import or export my profile since yesterday, I only get the message:

"Please wait a few minutes before you try again to import or export the settings".

On other instances I have never experienced such issues.

Does anybody know a workaround?

Hi friends,

Overview: I live across the world from the discuss.tchncs.de server and have noticed when I "fresh load" (or browser reload, but not a shift-reload force) the banner image on the home page sidebar always re-downloading (it's noticeable, takes 1-2 seconds). Once on the site, clicking "tchncs" top left to go back to the homepage does not trigger the re-download, fyi.

https://discuss.tchncs.de/pictrs/image/7285a9e0-5492-4461-8188-6778d7d594c7.jpeg

  • The image is only ~500kb (depending if you get the JPG or webp) and it 100% has proper cache-control headers being sent. It's in 1920x1080 size and always gets down-sized into a smaller size to fit on the sidebar. There is nothing wrong with the server headers in the response.
  • Using the webdev console, I found is that Firefox does not seem to send If-modified-since headers in the request so the server has to always return a 200 instead of a 304 (use cached version). So it's probably cached in my browser, by the browser isn't sending the right type of request to trigger use of the cache on my side. Not sure if Lemmy code bug or Firefox bug not sending if-modified-since headers, not a webdev. :)

Suggestion: Since this image appears to only be used to always downscale on the browser side to fit in the sidebar (? I think?), we could probably pre-downscale it on the server side to half or 1/4 of it's fileize. This would reduce network bandwidth for the server side and increase responsiveness on fresh load for users.

Thanks for reading.

the Web UI of https://discuss.tchncs.de/ seems to be loading slowly for me a lot of the time. Like, the past 3 days, it has taken 10+ seconds to load.

I think it's only the Web UI though and not the API because when i click an upvote button, it's snappy fast.

I just saw i asked the same question 3 months ago. Back then, it was also lemmy-ui that caused issues.

Could you/we maybe install/get an alternative web UI, like Photon? https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/ does it like this: https://phtn.lemmy.blahaj.zone/

It started a few days ago that using the https://discuss.tchncs.de/ website (through the browser, default UI) is slow. It typically takes a few (maybe 5) seconds to load the front page, and often when opening a post, it takes another 5 seconds to load.

Writing comments and upvoting seems snappy fast though, so i suspect it has more to do with the UI and not the API.

This has been happening for months, but I think it has gotten worse lately. Loading my default feed (Subscribed with Scaled sort) initially takes anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds every time. Is this normal/expected?

Loading more items works normally, as does everything else, it's just the initial loading that takes frustratingly long. Refreshing the feed right away works quickly too, but after couple of hours the first load is slow again.

I've tried both the default web app and Voyager, and both have the same issue. It's not a critical problem by any means, but it is frustrating, especially since it seems to have gotten worse recently.

The instance has just been updated. There was a slight hickup with web-ui which has been fixed. :)

Alongside the update, I started with a lazy little Ansible playbook. Curious folks are welcome to have a look at the repo. Don't expect anything special, complete or tidy - right now its only purpose is updating the instance. However i think i will add some more config templates to it asap (like systemd, webserver). This instance does not run on Docker, therefor (and for other reasons) the official playbook does not apply. :)

Since their domain issue and resurgence Ive noticed that Im not really seeing any hexbear posts on all anymore, and i honestly miss their posts. I switched to another instance while earlier and saw quite a few from hexbear, but on switching back they arent in my feed. I see that this instance is still federated with them so does anyone know why they don't seem to be showing up?

As the title says. Ive recently found a job but I still unfortunately need to find a way to eat for the next two weeks before I’m officially paid. I was wondering if there was a loan or borrow community in this lemmy instance. We can set up an agreement, I provide you with my name/id/social media etc. If this post isn’t allowed no worries I’ll figure something out.

I tried creating a post with an image in it. I got the following error message displayed in my browser:

{"data":{"files":null,"msg":"Too wide"},"state":"success"}

Is there something wrong with my image? I was trying to reupload this one from reddit: https://preview.redd.it/2jxm187wf4a81.png?width=11320&format=png&auto=webp&s=494d575dd3110b67b37b1c67afa9e713fd258a07

Should I try again after resizing?

How do I show multiple images I wanted to show the job offer not my face

Sorry for the delay and the brief interruption, tchncs has just been updated to v0.19.11. :)

The interruption happened due to database migrations taking a little moment.

Hey fellow humans,

I just recently discovered Lemmy. I had an understanding of the general existence of the "Fediverse" for some time, but never gave it much thought. Over the past months or so I read a lot on Reddit and by shear accident discovered Lemmy during that time, as a more federated, free alternative to big-corp Reddit.

Do not get me wrong. I am not per se opposed to big corporations. I am a bit more critical with those corporations that are mainly involved with information and data processing, so basically big-tech.

Now here I am, freshly registered to a german instance and I wanted to share my first impressions of Lemmy or the "Lemmy network".

First off, Lemmy seems great. It has a nice and clean UI and its easy to understand.

But, tbh I already had a bad feeling when it came to choosing an instance to register to. Will I be basically at the mercy of whoever runs that server (with what I am allowed to say at least locally)? What happens when that person or group decides to shut down the server over night? Will my account still be valid elsewhere? How does this work?

One could argue, well what happens when Reddit turns off their website; And of course on Reddit I am also at the mercy of moderators; From a single user perspective there always seems to be the single point of failure in both alternatives. But from my experience, "money makes the world go round", meaning: If there is a legitimate business case it is more likely that such a website or instance will stay online, whereas a lonesome enthusiast will likely loose interest after a while. And then its all gone (at least for that instance)? Is Lemmy than a sub-optimal Reddit alternative?

After registration I noticed something additionally "disturbing". There seems to be a big divide in the Lemmy community, as the instances are free to block certain instances. And I read here, about how big this problem apparently is. Hence, it is not about a big blocklist for unwanted instances, it is also about general focus of conversations across instances.

In fact, this puts me again at the mercy of any instance administrator what I am allowed to see or interact with. Is that not a contradiction of a rather free and open network? It appears anti-liberal in some sense. And a liberal digital society is what we would all strive for, I guess?

Ultimately, this would mean I would have to run my own instance to avoid the risk attached to this situation. But the extreme case of that would be that we are all running our own instances. That does not make sense at all. Then everyone runs and instance and we are all more or less blocking each other.

I guess there is no clean way of doing this? And in the end platforms like Lemmy are always formed by the people who drive them. Hence, personal opinions will always play a role.

But I think a liberal real life society goes to show how things should be: There are rules, but freedom of speech is very much emphasized. For me ideal communication involves that everyone can speak their mind. But then, there are certainly somewhere limits.

I am all against safe spaces, but I am pretty much for respectfulness, indulgence, fairness and constructive dispute. I do not fear any argument that is told in the pursuit of having an honest conversation, an exchange of arguments and ideas.

I would even say, when we are hindering ourselves of having this kind of honest dispute, we are loosing our developed societies.

On the other hand (like in the real world) simply insulting people should not be tolerated.

So, I wonder, is this place actually for me, apparently as a rather liberal person?

Is Lemmy liberal enough from your perspective?

Do you have insights or answers with regards to my questions or blind spots?

Thank you in advance and see you around!

Many Lemmy instances are misconfigured, which can break progressive video streaming and even basic image loading in strange ways. The latest default lemmy-ansible config handles this correctly, but many instances use custom proxy setups that cause issues. This tool will check that:

  • ✅ The instance supports HTTP range requests for proper video streaming
  • ✅ CORS headers are properly set for API and pictrs media

The instance result shows:

discuss.tchncs.de ❌ Error: Failed to fetch

Hi have tried to comment on a makertube video using my lemmy account, but I can't even find the video using the search function.

Is this the problem known?

I noticed thumbnails and meta description aren't working on discuss.tchncs.de sometimes when sharing a link. When I view the same post on feddit.org, the thumbnail and description is visible.

For example:

https://discuss.tchncs.de/post/32817362
no thumbnail, no description

https://feddit.org/post/9581626
thumbnail & description visible

I haven't detected a pattern yet. It just seem to work sometimes and other times it doesn't.
