What happened?

Due to the recent developments, I have decided to make this community moderator-only. There has been a mass spam attack involving gore and nudity. This is now a very serious situation and it is clear that something has to be done to stop this from happening. The new messages might be from a different, psychopathic spammer.

What we decided to do about it

To have better control of this situation, we decided to lock down the community, except for the comment section on this very post. (Please let me know if I've missed a post)

Rules

  • Please refrain to further spread the newest spam image, especially uncensored versions of it.
  • The "It's my girlfriend!"-joke is long gone. Be respectful, stop using it.

Going forward

Our main goal now is to stop the spread of spam on Lemmy. This seems like a major problem in Lemmy's concept, so we need to work together to create a working solution to the spam and potential defacing of users.

Update: The source of the gore images has been identified, so it's safe to say it's not actually the same person as "Nicole". Still fucked up, though.

I just got a very disturbing post from Nicole, from Lemmy.world none the less, where Nicole was... Indeed dead and naked.

I will not post the image here.

Very disturbing.

Whoever is doing this, has bad taste and a psychopathic trait.

Edit: the image showed gore and nudity, just to be clear.

Looking at the research megathread it's pretty hard to avoid the conclusion that Nicole is a victim of harassment.

If you follow any of the links in the message her work address is right there. It doesn't take much effort to confirm it is her real work address.

It's an unfulfilling answer but it is the most plausible. The only question is what next?

I feel like posting screen caps of the PMs with witty titles isn't really the right way to go. I know no one means any harm but we're just perpetuating the exposure and probably even encouraging the perpetrator.

Others have already tried to make her aware that she's being harassed through various avenues - a tricky proposition.

I presume devs are continually trying to improve anti-spam measures.

Maybe we could be a bit more respectful with the posts here, or discourage repeat posts of the same image.

I'm not some arbiter of ethics and morality trying to tell you all what to do, I just think these issues are worth some consideration and discussion.

With the newest image posted here, this has stopped being funny.
It now looks like an actual killer may be playing games on lemmy.

This doesn't need more publicity, in my opinion this calls for an admin to contact police.

Not much else to say, is there?

I guess I'll say I'm glad I broke my rule of no Lemmy this late at night. This just waiting for me was worth it.

What's the point of putting link urls in an image? Are they trying to filter out the thirstiest of Lemmings?

I received my fifth different picture of her today. I'm sure people in this sub have saw a few more. It really looks like someone spied on a webcam and used a real person photos to spam the fediverse.
They may be somewhere a woman who don't know her image is being abused and that she's becoming a internet meme.

We're not mean about Nicole around here but we should really be mindful. We are making fun of a spammer but how would feel real-life Nicole - Should we name her something? I like Sandra :) (See that's the kind of uncool thing to do to a real like person!), how would feel real-life Nicole or her loved ones if they find this community one day, full of pictures of her and people calling her "their girlfriend".

I love this community but we should be mindful.
