I have to redo my setup but I think I managed it (pre 6.3) by selecting avoid windows or autohide. I'm still not sure we're supposed to do this.

I may have to try then. I know NMS is strong on the survival aspect, and I like it this way, but somehow I associate fishing to leisure, and checking my shields would break the mood. I have to try it before the expedition ends and I regret not doing it.
