I'm running my instance for the same reason, it's been running for over a year and I'm the only active user. Although there's people passively using it as well.

Storage doesn't go over 100GB much. The only downside I notice is a community on Lemmy is only federated if at least one of the users is subscribed to it. Using Lemmy-federate you can add a bot account that subscribes to new communities.

Works just as seamless as on Linux, has amazing GUI options too.

Oh for sure, I'm saying malicious .lnk's won't all be this badly obfuscated

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Using shellcode it's possible to get persistent RCE using less then 100 bytes, don't let one bad attempt at obfuscation cloud your judgement. Size does not matter.

+1 for StirlingPDF, amazing tool. I use Handbrake for video conversion and Gimp for images. IT-tools for text based conversions, but it does many other things too and can be self hosted.

I'm not an English native speaker but shouldn't there be an "of" before America? And did the link change the title or was the screenshot altered?

Want to be on your smartphone and do nothing at the same time? Not in the hyperbolic sense, actually nothing. You could call it meditating or avoiding social contact, however you look at it, this site got a great laugh out of me when I realised its purpose, or perhaps lack thereof.

https://kiwix.org/en/applications/

From the most useless link to the most useful: this is Kiwix, a platform to behold. Distributing knowledge everywhere, Kiwix brings the power of the internet to the offline world. Having support for all platforms, even a Raspberry Pi can be used to create a local copy of Wikipedia, Stack-Overflow, iFixit or any other treasure trove of digital knowledge.

https://github.com/Stirling-Tools/Stirling-PDF

As a versatile tool for distributing a formatted document, PDF's are a great solution. They also come with a lot of frustrations, some security related, some editing related. Stirling PDF is a self-hostable PDF manipulation tool. Providing a way to edit, add, merge, secure, watermark, OCR and much more. Depending on your workload, it could just be a must-have.

Travel back in time to any nostalgic era with ease using this link. Provide them with a year and it'll spit out a list of clickable songs with their accompanying era accurate videoclips.

You could try adding your community to https://lemmy-federate.com/. The site lets admins add their instance and a bot account on each subscribes to them all to make them available faster on all instances.

Either way, they might need to clear their federation queue if it's a server issue.

I agree, and the inevitable enshittification is what brings people here. I've been here for about two years and people show no sign of leaving. Lemmy server v1.0 release on the horizon too.

Steady growth here, capitalizing on the inevitable fuckups and people will eventually see no value in Reddit.

LinkDumps are a classic piece of internet history, born out of growing lists of bookmarks and the need to share them in either an organised or chaotic fashion. I'm sure you've got lots of interesting places on the internet stored away and ready to be shared.

I've already shared a few LinkDumps, including one today. This is my way of spreading the word!

SQL, you love it or hate it. Become Sherlock Holmes and hate it even more, euh I mean love it. Enjoyment is subjective anyway. Now if anyone wants to torture me, make a regex version of SQLNoir.

What's my obsession with Wikipedia? Ask the people selling door-to-door encyclopedias in the olden days. So what happens when you mix an encyclopedia with a liminal space? The Museum Of All Things, Wikipedia made into a procedurally generated near infinite display of art. The only improvement I could come up with is adding multiplayer support in order to stumble into people wandering the halls of knowledge too.

KISS, one of the most important values in software design. But simple problems sometimes require complex solutions, as a response we have Dumbware. Needing barely any configuration, they solve those simple problems in the simplest way possible. Not ideal for public or production environments, but perfectly suitable for everywhere else.

Shortening URL's is a staple of the internet, why would you send 200 characters of nonsense when you could be sending 20? Zero Width Shortening takes this to the next level using Unicode that is not rendered by the browser. Honestly, it's something that is more important to know about than it has uses. As a demonstration, here's my Lemmy instance, made one character longer. Don't ask too many questions okay. https://zws.im/%E2%80%8D%F3%A0%81%AC%F3%A0%81%B6%F3%A0%81%A6%F3%A0%81%A4%F3%A0%81%A3%F3%A0%81%A1

Used by Teachers, Children, Tinkerers, Developers, and scientists, it's probably the best use of a smartphone yet. From basic sensor data to full-blown physics experiments, analyzing springs, or measuring the gravitational constant is just the tip of the iceberg. The best part? It's FOSS, has libraries for many platforms and can be downloaded right now on F-Droid, Play Store or the App Store on iOS devices.

Running Windows in 2025 needs a good reason, but those reasons exist. To make Network File Management from Windows to the rest of your Linux stack a little less of a mangeled shitshow, you can use SSHFS-Win. Combined with one of the GUI's listed, it will map network drives in your Windows Explorer as if they were natively supported.

Last Monday there was a Solid Community Meeting held in Ghent (Belgium), that I was fortunate enough to attend. With a wide range of speakers, it was mainly focused on this report from SHARCS. Which is a collaboration between researchers from different innovative organizations. They were tasked with finding the strengths and weaknesses of the Solid standard as it exists today. If you're not already familiar with Solid, I'd recommend watching this video first.

The internet is an amazing melting pot, but is that a good thing or a bad thing? Written by Sir Tim Berners-Lee - yes the internet guy, this article highlights technologies that are trying to improve the negative side effects of our modern day internet. A Fediverse must read.

Ever spent hours following one Wikipedia link to the next? Introducing, Wikipedia Doomscrolling. I'm truly sorry for any lost productivity due to WikiTok.

Doom doesn't need any introduction, but this roguelike mod does. Doom Infinite brings procedurally generated levels, random weapon variations, new items, new abilities and much more. Calling this the best Doom mod ever made is a matter of opinion though, but if you disagree, I might just rip and tear.

MUD's or Multi-User Dungeons are the original MMORPG's. Active since the 70's, MUD's still have a place on the internet. Being mostly text*-based adventures, it's a deep rabbit hole of early internet multiplayer gaming. The MUD Connector will find the perfect MUD for you.

Surgeons at Leuven University Hospital have transplanted four organs into a 2-year-old toddler during one single operation. It is the first time that all the abdominal organs of a toddler have been transplanted during a single operation in Belgium. The stomach, liver, pancreas and small intestine were all transplanted in the young patient in a single operation.

The two-year-old toddler had a genetic disorder that caused a nerve problem in the intestines. As a result, the child could not absorb food in the usual way but had to do so through a catheter. The prolonged use of the catheter in turn caused infections. On top of this, the baby had liver problems. All this meant that all abdominal organs had to be replaced. The operation was a success.

Scientists from the Centre for Brain and Disease Research at Leuven University and at VIB.AI have succeeded in creating synthetic DNA using artificial intelligence. The AI model was able to design 'enhancers', or 'switches', that can be used to activate specific genes. "Groundbreaking," the team says. The results of the research have been published in the renowned scientific journal Nature.

The Flemish Peace Institute on Thursday launched a new online knowledge portal on gun violence in the European Union. Gunviolence.eu features an incident monitor that provides a global picture of firearm incidents in all member states.

The platform's incident monitor lists up-to-date information based on media reports from more than 350 local news sources. The tool will also generate a monthly trend report.

"Thanks to the sophisticated algorithm and self-learning nature of the AI technology used, this monitor will become a crucial tool for a more robust and effective approach to firearm violence by law enforcement," said director Nils Duquet.

In the Antwerp town of Willebroek the decision has been taken to continue a project to reduce street lighting for the sake of nocturnal animals. Grid operator Fluvius and the Flemish Nature and Forestry Agency have joined forces to deploy "smart street lighting". It means the municipality can save up to 40 per cent on its energy bill but "on top of that, we expect several bat species to benefit too" says René Meeuwis of the Nature and Forestry Agency.

An observatory in Zirkstraat in the centre of Antwerp is being completely renovated and officially reopened at the weekend. It has been in existence for a century but has not been used for the last 20 years. People’s Observatory Urania now wants to change that. The renovation will ensure that from 2024 onwards the general public will be able to look at the stars and planets here.

From next spring anyone in the centre of Antwerp wanting to look at the stars, moon and some of the planets will be able to do so in the renovated observatory in Zirkstraat. "It is more than a hundred years old, but has not been used for about 20 years," says the director of People’s Observatory Urania Marc Van den Broeck.

"We are now renovating the entire observatory, a renovation which includes two new classic telescopes. They are old models, but the quality of the images is fantastic."

The European Parliament has adopted its position on new rules around packaging as it aims to combat the increase in waste and encourage recycling.

Packaging waste grew by more than 20 per cent between 2010 and 2020 in the EU, with almost 190 kg of packaging thrown away per person every year.
