Some other safety features like better braking systems do add something for pedestrians, but depend on visibility. If in a larger car you can't see small kids as well as in a smaller car, simply due to the dead angles involved, those features do not help anything.
So in quoting "fewer deaths", it may be important to ask: deaths of whom? Adult drivers or pedestrian children?
Which group needs protection more?
