Southern California. There's a small "wetlands" nearby that acts as a desert oasis, so occasionally marsh birds come hang out in the front yard.

I actually did read Mexican Gothic a few years back and enjoyed it as well. I think I'm conflating "horror" with "scary" or "off-putting" and that's why I keep coming up short with this genre.

For anyone familiar with the genre, any recs for novels? I love horror but most books come off pretty campy.

Don't worry, I will do penance with 6 months of triple digits

Actually two friends came to hang out at the same time! On the lookout for the many gophers in my neighborhood.

So the sixth book of the Red Rising series (Light Bringer) has been sitting on my shelf, unread, for over a year now. I really enjoy the series, but in the 4-year gap after the release of Dark Age I've forgotten much of the complex plot.

Instead of trying to find a lackluster video summary, or doing a re-read of ~2700 pages, I'm giving Graphic Audio's release a shot. It's honestly been fantastic. I typically prefer a single narrator if I'm doing audiobooks, but this is a really polished, full-cast production. They use the original text, so I don't have to worry about missing anything in an abridged version adapted for the medium, but it still feels like an audio drama.

If you're like me and want to revisit the series or just getting starting for the first time, this theatrical version is actually really good!

Nice, Service Model was my next one on deck. The synopsis looked super enjoyable, so now I'm excited 👍

I still think about Diamond Dogs every so often. Kind of gave me the same vibes as the movie, The Cube

I've read everything this man's written; it's all amazing. Obviously the revelation space series is the most well-known, which I can't recommend highly enough. If you want to get a taste of that universe without committing to the series yet, Chasm City is really great standalone.

I just started the last book of the Final Architecture trilogy. Not as good as the Children of Time series imo, but still very good. Tchaikovsky is becoming one of those authors that I'll probably read whatever he puts out (along with Alastair Reynolds).

Which of the standalones did you like the best?

I just finished A Drop of Corruption as well! I enjoyed the ride and am digging the biopunk setting. Although I feel like the leviathan threat was noticeably absent since it seems like a core trait of the worldbuilding.

Ana is an incredibly fun character to read, and Din makes a good straight man for a partner. I do think the author has leaned a little heavily into the whole Sherlock holmes bit already after only 2 books, but it hasn't taken anything away from the story.

Extra points for the totally new genre of fantasy-biopunk-mystery-kaiju defense.

woah, this is amazing. Seriously considering spending $120 on a book now
