If you're into the horror genre, the Bram Stoker Awards for 2025 have just released their preliminary ballot listings. Lots of categories, lots of great work - not just book fiction but also graphic novels, poetry, short stories and non-fiction.

Y'know, just in case you wanted to add to your already completely unmanageable TBR piles.

For anyone familiar with the genre, any recs for novels? I love horror but most books come off pretty campy.

Star Wars actually has a couple in the Legends.

Red Harvest

Death Troopers

They’re by no means great reads, but they were enjoyable and didn’t rely too much on main Star Wars casts to tell the stories.

Now to show how silly they are, one uses a direct rip of a Taken quote…

Listen to me, Trace told him. I don't know who you are, but I am in possession of a very special set of skills. If you bring my sister back right now, unharmed, then I'll let you go. But if you don't, I promise you, I will track you down. I will find you. And I will make you pay

I recently finished and loved Mexican Gothic.

I actually did read Mexican Gothic a few years back and enjoyed it as well. I think I'm conflating "horror" with "scary" or "off-putting" and that's why I keep coming up short with this genre.
