It is focused a lot around edge gestures. Swipe from the right edge of the screen to change applications, swipe from the right to open the application menu. Swipe from the top for settings. Swiping from the bottom is reserved for the app that is currently running.

It means that apps have to be designed to avoid accidental triggering of edge gestures, but after a few days on Ubuntu Touch it feels really natural.

In my short period of using it, I never stopped fumbling around for the desktop. I guess it's good, as it inspired me to close unused background apps.

On the flip side, once I returned to Android it took me ages to stop using the edge gestures. The UX of Ubuntu Touch is just wonderful.

Thanks!! I should have done that ages ago!

I knew about this in theory, but I used DuckDuckGo for a long time and got too spoiled to a point where it didn't occur to me to just set it up myself.

Thank you for connecting the dots for me, I'll set ut up right away.

Mojeek is probably the closest thing right now to a normal-looking search engine that is completely independent from Google and Bing. UK based.

They'll start with the German and French web, so if you're searching in English you'll probably have to wait for a while indeed.

I'm generally pretty happy with the results in Qwant.

The main thing I miss at this point is really support for !bangs. I use them all the time in DuckDuckGo, to search directly in !scholar or !wiki. Especially in Qwant there are some features missing, so if I for example want to be lazy and use the search bar as a calculator it would be nice to be able to search for !ddg 2+2.

But that's a minor criticism. For the most part it's a great tool, and I look forward to where they go with their own indexes.

Edit: Also, what's up with this graphic suggesting search engines (if you can call them that) as alternatives to Google Chrome.

I think phone operating systems are incredibly sensitive software, and they should always be considered carefully. So no disagreement there.

Ironic as fuck then that I'm currently using stock Android. Oh well.

More or less the entirety of western society failed in not sanctioning Russia profoundly in 2014, and we are now paying the cost. No doubt. But I wouldn't exaggerate Jolla's role - going through a bankruptcy to shake investors off seems to me to be dedication, even if it might be a bit late.

Canonical gave up on Ubuntu Touch, but being open source some Norwegian guy decided to continue developing it anyway. Others joined in, leading to the ubports foundation. Canonical let them continue to use the name Ubuntu Touch and there is some continued cooperation, but Ubuntu Touch is completely independent from Canonical these days.

Sailfish OS is developed by Jolla, who are a Finish company with offices in Finland (Tampere and Helsinki) and China (Hong Kong).

The Russians have forked Sailfish into Aurora OS, but that's a separate system. It started out as a cooperation, but Jolla cut all ties with Russia in 2021.

It seems they had Russian investors and took active means to get rid of them:

In 2024, to escape Russia's investors due to the Ukrainian war, the Jolla initial company filed for bankruptcy, continuing its activity under the JollyBoys name.

I would obviously not use Aurora OS, but do you have any information that would indicate that @[email protected] or Sailfish OS are compromised?

I appreciate that he also takes time to focus on a positive message. Democracy, diversity, all that. Populist movements that celebrate diversity are just not that scary to me.

Nick Cave - Frogs (2024) (www.youtube.com)

From Nick Cave's latest album, Wild God.

The song prompted a fan to ask Cave the following:

what makes you decide whether a lyric is great or should be dumped cos it’s utter shit, cos, and I mean this in the nicest possible way, you walk a very fine tightrope between the two, my man.

Which Nick Cave chose to personally answer on his website. It's a fine read.

One of the all time greatest songwriters. There's not a single song on his first album (Kristofferson) that is not made for the history books.

Nick Cave recemtly referenced him (and his cleanest dirty shirt) on his newest album (Wild God, song Frogs), in a song that is all about life and death. Seems relevant somehow.

Then I headed back for home
And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringing
And it echoed through the canyons
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday

I am currently using GNOME Backups (aka Déjà Dup Backups) to backup all my files to a "backups" folder in my Dropbox. This is not a good solution - first because I want to stop paying for dropbox, second because I don't want to keep everything in the cloud, third because everything is stored twice on my laptop and storage is precious.

I therefore want to manage back-ups locally instead. I would like to keep using Déjà Dup, as it has worked really well and effortlessly.

My initial idea is very bare bones. I could keep an old laptop running 24/7, connect a hard drive, and use SSH file transfer in Deja Dup in order to store everything on that machine. That said, I have a few concerns as well.

  1. Is this a good way of doing things? Should I be doing something else instead?
  2. I'm not always at home - will it be a problem if the Backup software cannot find the folder because it's not on the correct network, or will it have the sense to wait until it's connected to the correct wifi?
  3. Will the old laptop use a lot of power, or is it regrettable for any other reason? Is it possible to make it automatically hibernate for example during the nigthtime? Or to have it spend very little power unless anything is connected via SSH?
  4. Would it be better to get a dedicated device, like a Rasberry Pi or something? I don't have all too much faith in my old laptop not making noise with the fan running at random times.

It looks like my partner will be getting a new laptop running Linux soon enough as she has to hand in her work computer, so it would be good timing to get a proper solution into place.

Thank you in advance!

I picked up a Ducky One Mini at a flea market yesterday, and after cleaning it extensively it seems to be working pretty well for the most part. I'm using it for writing and coding, so not having dedicated arrow keys will take some getting used to, but other than that it seems neat enough for the price I paid.

However, the alternative graphic button (on the right side of the space bar) is completely unresponsive. Pressing it just makes no difference at all. I used a tool that maps keyboard presses in Linux (xev), and it showed nothing when Alt Gr was pressed (just like the Fn button), so it seems no signal is being sent from the keyboard to the computer.

It could be that this is due to some setting made by the previous owner, or maybe there's something else going on. Maybe I need to update the firmware. Maybe it's broken. I have no idea.

The back-light behind some of the numerical keys is also disabled or broken, but it doesn't bother me much as I'm not a big fan of back-light anyway.

But if anyone has any suggestions what to try for the alternative graphic key it would be much appreciated! For now I have re-routed right super (Windows button) to be read as Alt Gr, but it's not very convenient when writing Latex and using a lot of curly brackets. :)
