Scumbags.

A guy who was throwing rocks near the Mammoth Lakes library was shot dead by a Mammoth Lakes police officer. Not much more detail than that. The DOJ is investigating the incident.

While I was driving out of the Mammoth High parking lot, I saw the Mammoth PD closing off Sierra Park Rd. to the Mammoth Lakes library. Apparently there was an officer-involved shooting. I have. no more detail than that.

My dream acoustic. Made with a AAAA grade German spruce top (very tight-grained, cream color which should darken nicely over time), and a unique AAAA grade, flamed kihada back and sides. Kihada comes from the Amur cork tree, an indigenous hardwood in Japan. It is very rarely found flamed like this. Mahogany neck, spoke-shaved by hand in a soft-V to C shape with satin finish. Simple and elegant appointments in a very Japanese minimalist style. Forward-shifted x bracing, and it is all hand crafted in the Yairi workshop located in the city of Kani, in the Gifu prefecture, Japan. Yairi guitars, for those who know them, are remarkable instruments. Enjoy the pics. This was one of twelve (12) created in this configuration.

From a post on r/Mammoth on Reddit:

"The love and support in this subreddit has been amazing over the last week. I read comments and never chimed in, but it meant so much to see friends of Claire and strangers coming together to root for her. I want you all to know more about her and the amazing person she was. These words are taken from my brother, who says it better than anyone else could.

“I'm heartbroken to share that my 25-year old cousin Claire Murphy died last week in an avalanche while working as part of the ski patrol on Mammoth Mountain in California. It is so unusual for ski patrollers to die in the line of duty that the story has made virtually every single major news outlet in America. It's truly tragic.

Claire was a bright light to everyone who met her. Fierce, opinionated, and strong willed. And so full of love and affection to those around her. She finished her Masters in Social Work at the University of Southern California less than a year ago because she wanted to help others. But before she started her career, she wanted to fulfill a long time dream of being on the ski patrol--a group of people she had grown up admiring as a girl who had skied her entire life.

Life is truly not fair, and this is a harsh reminder of that. We are sad, but so grateful for her good and abundant life even if far too short. Until we meet again, Claire. We're all better for having been loved by you.”

Rest easy Claire.

Yes, definitely a rookie mistake. I'm sure they were tired, and just didn't give it a second thought. Hopefully they've learned some valuable lessons about backpacking, and will take a lot more care if they ever decide there will be a "next time."

They were clearly woefully unprepared for an actual backpacking trip. It's no big deal to learn from one's mistakes, of course. I'm just glad this misadventure didn't turn deadly...
