Dark Souls 1 - Solaire and Siegmeyer of Catarina. Both NPCs who are helpful and cheerful towards the player in a fairly grim game world.

"With friends like these..."

In any functioning political system, Kaine would be part of the right-wing party.

Instead we have the fucking fascist party, and get stuck in a big tent with this fucking bootlicking neolib dipshit.

We aren't the target audience.

Unfortunately, there is an audience that will swallow this rancid shit and ask for seconds.

Sawing off the branch their prosperity is built on. Hoping, perhaps not incorrectly, that they'll be dead before we all hit the fucking ground.

Just finished The Roman Villa. An older book, and dry as death.

It was interesting, however, to see concepts which were cutting-edge in the 70s (connecting certain non-Latin place-name endings with Roman villas, the collapse of the Roman economy as a function of societal decline rather than destructive invasions, the continued habitation and transformation of post-Roman villa locations) but are simply accepted orthodoxy now.

I remember talking with my mother a few years ago about the differences in education between her day and mine, and the knowledge that the "Memorize the dates" was an actual technique used in her day is just horrifying.

I probably would've been turned off history entirely before I was even out of grade school if schools in my area still took that approach.

Instead we learned about broad concepts, and events were emphasized more than the date they occurred on. We got to learn about the Silent Trade in Western Africa and the structure of feudalism in Medieval Europe, not what day or year Henry CXXXVII ascended to the throne.

"Amigo, you're hosed." - an online friend when he found out that I have a weakness for girls with tattoos, piercings, and technicolor hair (he has the same weakness)

The Obama years, when staying informed just meant a low-level sense of continuing dread at the obstructionism of the GOP and lack of spine displayed by the Dems.

It's not a question of "When were things good" but "When were things not getting worse at a horrific rate "
