I really thought about this last year, took the class and everything. In the end I decided not to get one. My reasoning is this: Having a gun and not a lot of experience in what to do with it is like playing a board game for life-and-death stakes that you have never played before.

Maybe I will regret at some point in the future, but I had trouble coming up with scenarios where I wound up thinking "Thank God I pulled my gun out, now all my problems are resolved."

It is a wonderful project, I got a little rush of nostalgia just from the mention of GW-BASIC.

Make sure you research what the "right way" is to approach some of the difficult problems you will run into; you will learn more that way instead of needing to struggle with figuring out how to pick out where the end of the current loop is or whatever. It will be more enjoyable and manageable I think, and also you will level up your skill.

I do think you should leave the emojis out of the summary, people will think you had ChatGPT write the description lol.

Good luck! It sounds like an endeavor. It will probably not get some wide adoption, as you mention there are plenty of these tools already, but that is not the reason to do it.

I can't really offer specific advice on this situation. I don't know. But I will say, in general separating from the person who's victimized by propaganda just helps the propaganda spread. A lot of this stuff actually has deliberate features and habits that it tries to instill into people, to make it drive away people who might talk sense into them and make it harder for them to hear sense if someone does say it to them.

I think you should view your MIL as a victim of propaganda, similar to a drug addict or a person with significant trauma in their life. A lot of them are victims. Of course, if she's telling you "I'm glad they're snatching all those US citizens and deporting them to hellish nightmare prisons in other countries just because they're Hispanic," then maybe you want to shun her. But usually what's happened is that they've gotten so twisted up in their perceptions that they think that what they're saying and supporting is something really good, and everyone should support it. The stuff that she is victimized by is incredibly powerful, it's not surprising to me that a lot of people get taken in by it.

Like I say it's hard to give general advice about what you should do. But this may help you to be more gentle with her even if you are aware of the hatefulness at work in the stuff she was victimized by and have some understandably big feelings about it.

Death to all the yanks.

Well I guess it makes sense why you don't want the sensible people to gain any power in our government then lol

I bet Putin made it himself.

Holy shit, you really think so? I gotta tell Blinken about that at our next meeting then...

I got all excited to use my mod powers within !politics@piefed.social and try out this new principle where if someone says something, and you say some totally different thing you're pretending they said and then argue against the imaginary thing, you get banned.

But alas. We're not in there, so I can't. Keep trying though! Criticizing pro-Palestinian politicians by pretending they are anti-Palestinian politicians sure does help the fuck out of the Palestinians. Keep it up.

In some places here they get to dictate the whole discourse and consensus, which is upsetting

A lot of automated phone trees detect cursing or anger in the voice, I'm not surprised they do the same over text since it is simpler to do.

They (the people funding this stuff, I think) don't particularly care between Cuomo or Sliwa. They will continue to make money hand over fist with either one of them. But Zohran will represent a genuine issue for them, especially if other people see his success and it starts to spread.

Is it? Is that why the "thought" bubbles look kind of weird? I mean, yeah I guess it definitely could be... do you know what program?

So the mod of lefty_news is wanting to host it on a new domain. This has actually been in the works since long before the lemmy.ml defederation, but I am sure having a lot of their core audience be unable to interact with it for two weeks helped motivate him to pull the trigger. Seems understandable.

What I'm going to do is just add myself as a mod for !lefty_news@ibbit.at and keep this one up, for people from outside the lemmy.ml orbit who are already subscribed here. If you want the unfiltered experience from the original creators, go to !pravda_news@news.abolish.capital, that's the new home for this news as operated by @RedWizard@hexbear.net.

Probably the two will be pretty substantially similar. I think RedWizard is planning to put back some sources that got vetoed because they seemed like obvious propaganda:

  • Caitlin Johnstone 1 2
  • "Council Estate Media" 1

Also, I might also take out SCMP just for volume and quality-of-news reasons, and I'm open to recommendations for anything else to add or remove. But those are a handful of edge cases out of 46 feeds total that make up the thing. The vast majority of stuff in the overlap in our viewpoints as to what is and isn't "propaganda" will remain, including:

  • Common Dreams
  • The Intercept
  • Novara Media
  • Truthout
  • Democracy Now
  • And so on

Let me know if you have any feedback, anything like that. Cheers and take care.
