I don't have the know how to talk about safety and privacy, but here are some caveats.

I think you have to use their client and can't add your adress to 3rd party clients like thunderbird. Their client is however nice to work with.

If you forgot your password, the only way to change it is by using a key that is given to you after account creation. Keep it safe! Check for spelling errors If you lost the note or it's not in you passwordmanager or whatever you use, your account is not recoverable. Their support can't help you reset your pw.

Other than that they make email encryption pretty easy with a checkbox right under the recipient in the email editor.

Another handy feature are the aliases. (Payed feature) You can set up some email adresses for certain purposes, and filter their traffic into different inboxes quite easily. If one of them.get's compromised, deactivate and move in. Your master adress is probably still usable.

What I do not like is the fact that paying customers get support first.

I also got me one of those degoogled Fairphones

That's cool. I had no idea fairphones could be degoogled. What OS is it using? Lineage/Graphene or something else entirely?

I think hybrid is the way to go. You won't connect with your peers online the way you do irl, and I it's healthy to leave home from time to time. I also work better in a dedicated office space versus at home.

But as a student in an IT related field: God do I hate the uni pcs. They. would. not. run. unity. once. because of some obscure bug with my user profile and I had to waste my lecturers and my time switching users, trying to install the right version every single lesson. For two semesters I could not parttake. On my own PC at home I could have fixed that within minutes because admin rights and decent internet. Heck, I even asked the IT department if I could have admin rights which they denied, quite understadably. Sorry this turned a bit into a rant.

But cutting commute time and getting up shortly before lecture sure is nice :3

Pretty much any variation of power saw. The closer your hands are to the moving saw, the worse. Hand saws are cool tho. Love my Ryoba

never realized the cheetah is wearing a collar. does anyone know what that could be? Do Biologists put trackers on felines, like they do with marine animals to track their movement/migration patterns?

I don't have a lot of experience with that. I had a Win10 Virtual Machine ages ago, so it is possible but I don't know if/to what extend it could collect your data and sell it.

From my experience (Linux Mint exclusively) you might need to edit config files, fiddle with drivers and packages, and compatibility software like wine, lutris etc. ChatGPT proofed quite helpfull with most of these tasks, and there are passionate ppl on lemmy ready to help you out.

Gaming is in a great spot imo. I can run abt 90% of my steam games thanks to proton, and I was pleasently surprised that some EA games ran without the EA client. Competetive games on the other hand are a bit of a gamble since most of them don't have an anti cheat solution for Linux and won't run.

Based on your country microsoft will run a varying amount of ads in the OS, and as mentioned by other users: telemetry.

Is it worth installing Linux as a protest? Depends. Switching to Linux will always come with a little bit of tinkering involved. So the answer depends on your willingness to spend some time to learn a new OS. But it offers you the opportunity to gain some control over your machine, privacy and learn some things.

Saws. The sound they're making shakes me to my core and having to help someone who almost amputated their finger enforced that fear further

You make a good point. I also used Telegram some years ago and never gotten invites to questionable channels, although I think you can search for channels in the app. But another way to learn about them is through influencers advertising them on social media like Twitter, facebook, insta etc. which brings us full circle xD

on twitter it's in your face

I wrote a lengthy paragraph and realized that I don't know how bad it is, and how to act accordingly. I agree with another person saying, that they are against bans on media. Maybe the EU could offer a compromise: Abide by some fancy schmancy laws that address content moderation or get lost. But then again, I do not trust politicians in the EU parliament to a) understand the technology and it's limitations b) be interested in this, since there are many conservatives who could actually benefit from twitter being in the state it's in.

Not a fully formed opinion yet; but since X is ran in a way that encourages populism, misinformation and extremism, yeah. Maybe it could make it harder for extremists to connect and recruit new people. But if that is the goal, banning X is not enough. Platforms like Telegram are also popular for harboring extremists. So it would probably need a widespread effort across public platforms to be regulated and better moderated.

Hello friend. Good bye. Until we shall meet again.

I hope it's okay to ask this question here, since it seems to differ a little from general posts.

I am currently looking to upgrade my workstation GPU and AMD's pricing is far better suited for my budget. But I worry a lot about the driver stability, since I witnessed some true horror stories with AMD drivers back in 2020. I have also read that they've gotten a lot better in the meantime.

So if you happen to use an AMD GPU: How was your experience with productivity software (Unity, UE, Maya, blender etc.) so far?

[Solved]PC froze, now what? (discuss.tchncs.de)

What do I do, when my PC freezes?

Windows has ctrl+alt+del, does Linux Mint has something comparable? The only thing I know about is REISUB, but that borked my PC, so I am hesitant to use that again.

Are there any remaining alternatives to waiting and/or using the power button?

Edit: Thank you all for your insights and possible fixes. Crashes usually happened when I was running (cpu/ram?) heavy workload. Increasing swap space was not even on my radar, so I did that now. :) Hopefully Mint will run more stable now.

Hi there, I am currently looking for a replacement for my GTX1060.

existing hardware

  • CPU AMD Ryzen 7 5800x

  • RAM 16GB DDR4 @3600mHz

  • Motherboard MSI b550a-pro

  • PSU 750W

  • Usecase: Unreal Engine 5 and Jedi Fallen Order are the most expensive things I can think of

  • Budget ~300€

  • OS Linux Mint (Linux Kernel 6.8)

  • I was originally thinking about going with an AMD RX7600 since it's cheap and meets the recommended specs for Unreal Engine 5 (8GB VRAM, Raytracing).

Asking in other forums the intel Arc B580 was recommended. It looks promising, but since Arc GPUs are quite new, I am worried about compatibility and stability.

Are any of you using an Arc GPU at the moment and what are your experiences in Linux, primarily with productivity?

How stable are the drivers in your experience?

Could you recommend going with intel or sticking to AMD for the best experience?

Hi, I am planning to get my first wireless/BT headphones for my phone. But since GrapheneOS has always had minor bugs, I wanted to ask how reliable listening to bt speakers has been for you?
