This is not a new thing at all. Mobile games have been using rewarded ads for years so I'm not sure why they're acting like it's some groundbreaking thing.

Because so far that type of monetization scheme hasn't made headway outside of the mobile space. This is yet another frog-boiling moment where they gradually push what they can get away with.
And we will not really wonder when we'll see how tremendously far pushed that will be...
