Why would I want more electrons? And do they enter my body exclusively through my feet? Why? So many questions.

But also: the definition of "meme" is being stretched.

You don't have to but they're FREE! Why skip on such a deal? /s

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 5 points 11 months ago

I had indeed not considered this important fact and I thank you for making me aware.

one of the most potent antioxidants

The kind of people believing this will also buy cheap electric "air purifiers" from Temu, which actually just generate ozone, one of the most potent oxidants

Technically, free electrons entering your body would give you a negative charge, which would reduce oxidation because oxygen ions are negatively charged. The same effect is used to reduce rust on ship hulls.

Unfortunately you need oxidation to breathe - that's how hemoglobin works - so if you actually had enough electric charge to serve as an antioxidant you would suffocate. Also maybe the electric repulsion would be strong enough to dismember you, I haven't done the math.

that’s how hemoglobin works

from time to time, I stumble onto this fact, and every time it feels weird that we're rusting our blood so we can live

Sure but you're not getting electrons or the resulting "powerful" antioxidation from a "grounding effect". Unless you were previously charged with a positive electrostatic potential, I guess.

Idk about the claims. I know going barefoot is great for the soul Not so much the soles, in hot weather on beaches, but you know. It feels pretty great on grass and freshly turned earth.

Oh I'm with you, just the reasoning behind this meme is very 'electroculture' like thinking which is totally invalid.

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Basically idk Jack about it but I'd be interested to see research.

[–] JayGray91@lemmy.zip 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It's really big in the barefoot shoes community. To the point of being cultish personally.

SpoilerBut then again I viewed fediverse evangelist as cultish too 😬

Vivobarefoot has a page about the science of it. Only the first 1/3 of the page has references to a few papers. The other 2/3 is ATM I consider marketing as there's no research paper referenced.

My ISP is blocking it! Thank you though, I'll look around at some point.

[–] Lumidaub@feddit.org 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Your ISP is blocking a quirky but otherwise (as far as I can tell) harmless shoe shop? Does it give a reason?

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It's griping about the ssl cert, which is annoying because it's let me visit other sites that others' have had blocked, before. I chose "visit site anyway" and it still blocks it. 🙄

[–] Maeve@kbin.earth 2 points 11 months ago

Aye, it surely is.

[–] JayGray91@lemmy.zip 2 points 11 months ago

Bummer! If I have the time I'll link the papers

Know what else transfers from the earth to your body when you walk barefoot? Fungi and parasites like Hookworm. Have fun down that rabbit hole.
