FYI even if you have been vaccinated you may still need to get a booster.

https://www.livescience.com/health/viruses-infections-disease/are-you-protected-against-measles-do-you-need-a-booster-shot-everything-you-need-to-know-about-immunity

TDLR: if you were vaccinated in the 1960s you may need a whole new course of boosters. Also, if you were vaccinated before 1989, you may need one additional shot, since the 2-shot model wasn't recommended by the CDC until then.

Stay safe out there folks.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yep, had my 1st measles shot in the mid-60s, a booster in '74, and now this year found (via a blood test) that my immunity had waned to a point that another shot was needed. Got it. Five stars, no pain, highly recommended.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No side effects like the Covid shots?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I had the Covid shots too. They all had powerful side-effects. My whole life, I've never been able to catch measles. I didn't get sick from Covid. I probably won't die from measles now either. That's right, they took away muh Freedumb!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

That’s the primary effect not the side effects ;) Was just curious because covid shots are the only vaccines in my adult life that have given me side effects

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago

Good looking out. I'm on the west coast, but still going to mention it to my folks.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

I got my booster right after RFK got sworn in. Also polio, monkeypox and COVID of course.

Good luck everyone

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 week ago

Honestly I only feel bad for the children. Every single one of those parents had a decision to do the best for their child and chose not to do this. So I feel bad for the kids, but hope (very thin sliver) that some of those parents wake up and realize that they fucked up.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 weeks ago

It's their freedom as Americans to get the measles.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Good.

Let them die, they are getting everything they wished for. Would have been so nice if they'd only had the brains to recognize what they were wishing for but alas, here we are.

I feel nothing for you beyond that you're a cancer on this world and it's immune system just kicked in

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 week ago (2 children)

The kids have nothing to do with it though

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah but these kids will grow up exactly like their parents, paying it forward every generation. If we can't save them, then I won't care about them either.

That, or we start doing forced vaccinations, which I'm a huge proponent of. You vaccinate or get deported to a remote island where you can stay until you die.

I'm so done with these people

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

This feels like a “tell me you’re from a left-leaning state without actually saying it”. Do you know how many people grow up with shitty conservative parents and want to be nothing like them? You sound like conservatives saying they don’t care if children of Hamas members die because they’d just grow up to be terrorists anyways.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Magats beget more Magats more often than not so they're probably doing us a favor in the long run. And besides, do you wanna be the one to tell those parents how to raise their kids? I'm sure that'll go over real well with them.

Let's all just do as they say. Ya know, put our faith in the Lord's hands and trust that he works in "mysterious" ways to fulfill his plan :>

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

Sure kids will have some world view influence from their parents, but they don't have the tools to understand what's going on or authority to decide and also the ones that suffer. On top of that it seems like the parents that lost their child so far had no regrets and only doubled down.

It's a lose lose situation

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Let them die, they are getting everything they wished for. Would have been so nice if they’d only had the brains to recognize what they were wishing for but alas, here we are.

Here's the problem with that, the anti-vax adults were likely vaccinated as children, so they'll live, while their children die, never connecting the dots as to why they survived.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (3 children)

And? I'm at the point where I see it as gene removal from the pool

Sorry, not sorry. It sucks to be those kids but they can't be saved no matter what you do and these kids will be the next anti Vax generation anyway

Good riddance

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Harsh.

low key agree tho

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Vaccines are not 100% effective. You need those kids to be vaccinated also or your vaccinated child would still run a 3% risk if exposed. I have terrible luck and that's not a risk I am willing to take.

My daughter's school will allow for medically necessary unvaccinated children (eg, immunocompromised so cannot take a live vaccine), but only until they hit the herd immunity limit. After that they turn away parents for the unvaccinated child because they have to protect the other children. Those parents will probably be frustrated at first but, recognizing the need for herd immunity from the school for their child, will be better off. They will just have to find a other school that has an opening. This shouldn't be hard if the only refusal for vaccines was for medical purposes, but it's getting harder these days.

Public schools should do this. I think some do, but maybe not. And certainly not with our current admin if they can force whatever they want. My point though is that it's not only the "stupid antivaxxer's kids" who will die. It's 3% of all the others. And that's just for measles. Polio is coming back too. Who knows what else.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

Yes, vaccines are not 100% effective, and sometimes a vaccine will actually cause harm.

However, vaccinate 95+% of the population and you get there immunity and you can kill entire diseases

That no longer is possible now. It became dicey years ago but now that the conspiracy theorists won, all major diseases will make a comeback like there (for many people) literally is no tomorrow

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

A lot of us with conservative families would prefer not to be lumped in with them, not everyone follows their parents footsteps, especially with conservative ones.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

Then seriously, leave. Leave the US.

That, or protest, rebel, fight back hard. Do whatever is needed to stop this madness.

I'm ao very sorry for you that you're an American and that you have to deal with this shit but please understand: The rest of the world didn't cause any of this. This, the past 5 decades and especially trump, is ALL on Americans and their attitudes. I'm sorry, but your country always has been a shit show that caused untold suffering and death world wide. Ask Iran, Chile, Nicaragua, and many other countries what they think of the US and Americans

And now the world has to deal with Cheeto. Apparently less than 50% of Americans voted, meaning that only about 25+%-ish voted trump. That makes 50% of Americans complicit in all this by not voting. Why the fuck didn't you vote?? You caused this.

The entire fucking world is upside down in chaos now. China will be emboldened to invade Taiwan, Russia is emboldened to invade the entire eastern Europe, Israel is emboldened to exterminate Palestinians in a genocide not seen since the one in WWII, you know, where Jews were purged... , Canadians, greenlandians, Panamanians, we're all scared shitless about an actual fucking invasion (which always comes with the fun of countless innocent deaths, hunger, suffering and traumas) because of this emperor Elmo and Cheeto shit.

So I'm sorry that lumping you in with conservatives makes you feel bad, but I got bigger problems to deal with. I need all Americans to get their shit together and stop this nonsense one way or the other, I don't want WWIII.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (2 children)

These people were tricked into believing vaccines are bad. They're victims (stubborn and idiotic ones)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago

They're victims that willingly make others victims too. These are victims in the same way that a sexually abused child, when grown up, will do the same to other children.

For sure, hit the big organizations that spread this dangerous nonsense, but don't treat these people like innocents, they're not. They are actively causing a lot of harm

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago

How many times do you have to get bit by a dog before you stop trying to save it?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 weeks ago

Skimmed the article and had to back glance at the Moscow School District. Had to double check I was still in Kansas. No wonder Dorothy was so damn confused

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 weeks ago

PSA, if you are worried, have your physician order an antibody titer. It essentially measures the amount of anti-MMR antibodies in your blood to ensure you are immune.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The saddest part about this is that the people telling others not to vaccinate aren't going to suffer from this because they know they're spreading bullshit and thus already vaccinated themselves.

[–] [email protected] -5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

I see a lot of folks on the left making fun of maga supporters for being against vaccines etc, but I’ve only ever met anti vax leftists…. I’m not against vaccines I believe the science but it’s less of a left right issue than we believe it to be….

I can, however, say that I understand any concern or trepidation folks in the US have because of our fucked up healthcare system, the astronomical cost of healthcare even many can not afford preventative care, would lean folks to believe less scientifically proven methods and non traditional health care.

In the United States if you get sick, you lose everything.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago

It's more known as a right-wing thing these days because of Covid, but the OG antivaxxer stereotype was the hippy mom who didn't want to put "chemicals" in their children because 'big pharma' is evil, and don't you know vaccines cause autism?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I never saw this as a right vs left thing, just a stupid vs smart thing. But I can see why people would assume anti-vaxxers are right wing.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Because anyone left of center is a socialist or communist according to the academics

Which is odd because every other democratic nation in the free world has a form of HEALTHCARE FOR ALL that far exceeds ours , find one and that is worse? Cuba probably has top secret doctors helping us who knows

Movie plot: submit to ai for scenes and dialogue: a young phd who almost failed his exam is in love with the idea of meeting aliens, but his wild ideas and drunken equations prove correct as we meet the protagonist

Edit: caps text

Edit I have seen and interacted with a little bit of ai

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

they all moved to the right wing. update on your info.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I bet they're having measles parties so it does actually spread thinking it'll just go away like a cold

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Literally seen a news report on this and one parent of a child that died said it was all good cause at least his kid wasn't autistic. These people are straight evil.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Eugenics in action. Another 1930s holdover like Nazis.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

Bro, as someone living here I hope you're wrong. Sadly though, reality doesn't match up with my dreams.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I didn't know arstechnica wrote articles outside of tech stuffs. Apparently the measles case was on their front page as their most viewed article.
