It doesn't ultimately matter. It's turned from silly spam into actual scam shit, and whether this is the original spammer or a copycat, it's no longer worthy of attention.

Has anything good been done with it? A lot of bad has been done with it.

There would be no ransomware or darknet marketplaces if there was no crypto.

Plus it is proof-of-work so it uses a lot of energy for no reason.
