Perhaps he means the conservative canard that belief in a common good and/or attempting to make the world a better place are the root of all evil, and that, had they rejected public service and instead competed against each other in one marketplace or another, there’d have been no Holocaust and no gulags, only millions of naturally unremarkable deaths
