Summary

The Trump administration spent $16 million setting up a migrant detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, but all detained migrants have since been transferred to Louisiana.

Trump had planned to detain up to 30,000 undocumented immigrants at the base, but reports indicate no clear plan for such an expansion.

Lawmakers criticized the effort as costly and inefficient. The ACLU called it illegal and unnecessary.

With no further migrant transfers planned, some U.S. troops sent to Guantanamo may be reassigned to border operations.

DOGE will now be forced to shut down ICE...right?

[–] MeekerThanBeaker@lemmy.world 45 points 11 months ago (1 children)

They should've just gave me half that money. I'll waste it on a home and retirement. It would've been cheaper.

[–] SoleInvictus@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 11 months ago

I'd take the other half and the detained immigrants - for free! Then I'd hire them all immigration lawyers and split up what's left.

Where was DOGE on this? They could have saved taxpayers $16M or more by simply shutting down ICE. 🤦‍♂️

Donald "No Clear Plan" Trump

„Concepts of a plan“ trump

[–] bluegreenwookie@bookwormstory.social 12 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Still blows my mind a candidate can say that and still get elected

[–] sfxrlz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 11 months ago

Well that’s still way down on my „do-not-say-prez-list“ but yeah, I agree.

The effects of brainwashing

Nothing more Republican than wasting taxpayer dollars. Seriously. It's what they get off on. Just look at Greg Abbott, I've never seen a politician waste more money on frivolous political stunts than Greg Abbott. Well until now at least. It's like they get off on burning your money in front of you maliciously.

Where is DOGE now, huh? Maybe they should look into how much Trump's golf is costing tax payers, how about Elons billions in handouts.

Such efficiency…

It must have gotten flagged for being a transnational facility

Actual title which makes sense: ICE Wastes $16M on Guantanamo Bay Operation as All Migrants Returned to US

[–] GoatTnder@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Am I crazy? That's the exact same title as Newsweek printed. What point are you trying to make?

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 8 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Users can edit both the title and post text on lemmy, this submission may have changed to align to newsweek's title since the comment.

Jacobs told ABC News that officials at Guantanamo Bay said it cost $16 million to stand up the migrant camp, noting that each tent allegedly cost $3.1 million to construct, despite not being up to DHS standards.

U.S. officials told ABC News the tents did not comply with ICE's requirements for migrant detention, including provisions for air-conditioning and other amenities.

How much is this tent? 3 million? Wow. Okay. It’s got air conditioning, though, right? No? Oh. How much is that one- y’know what, nevermind.

What the fuck

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

This is a tent built to house thousands of people. In a remote location where the manufacturers are across and an ocean. 3 mill might be a bit high but the numbers start adding up.

Don't believe me, see you at the next fire festival.

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

It sure doesn’t look like it. https://archive.ph/a4ke2 (NYT archived article)

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Yikes, yeah, I'm dumb.

I'm just mathing here real quick:

3 mill per tent at 16million in waste is 5ish tents.

Then like maybe 10 cots per tent is like 50 peoples.

So there's gotta be more to it.

[–] PancakesCantKillMe@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

... gotta be more to it.

Probably a bunch of mini-grifting along the way. As you said, it can add up.

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

I mean it says right there those are images from a month ago. I dunno, I don't feel like I have the full story yet, at least.

Flip side. Thank God. The idea of detention camps at gitmo definitely kept me up for a few nights.

[–] halykthered@lemmy.ml 15 points 11 months ago

Spent millions to make people feel like yo-yo's.

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world 14 points 11 months ago (1 children)

No surprise.

All of this is a bit of a waste, really. A lot of those people were already in US prisons to begin with. We're paying ICE to re-arrest people. It's so dumb.

[–] optissima@lemmy.ml 8 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Rearresting innocent people nonetheless

[–] taiyang@lemmy.world -4 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

I mean, not everyone in prison is innocent. Some of them are cartel members, gang-affiliated face tats and all. But I guess, statistically speaking, quite a few probably weren't actually guilty of what they were put in for. Best not to think in absolutes.

Edit: clarified. That said, tats are not exactly something you're born with and prison tattoos are a thing, and a real problem for people seeking reform after gang membership. Family friend of mine was in XIII but ended up a muralist and needed it removed.

[–] xye@lemm.ee 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

face tats and all

This doesn’t make you a gang member, please don’t stereotype.

[–] Bo7a@lemmy.ca 1 points 11 months ago

My 63 year old mother has face tats. She just loves decorating herself.

[–] optissima@lemmy.ml 2 points 11 months ago

I think that everyone in a rigged system designed for their failure cannot be fairly judged by that system, and I assume innocence until proven otherwise.
