Naw that's just part of getting old.

My younger self would be very disappointed at the things I find exciting now.

I recently found an Indian grocery store that stocks those Heinz beans in the teal can that are popular on toast in the UK! ...turns out they're not very good. But I found them!!

[–] CouldntCareBear@sh.itjust.works 16 points 11 months ago (1 children)

"not very good". I'm actually getting really rather angry about this. In fact I think this might be a hate crime.

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 15 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Aw fuck. This is my cue to confront my own bias: my palate is Americanized as fuck. Hell, my own mother probably had a corn syrup subsidy to add it to her tit juice before feeding it to me as a baby.

So, take my culinary assessment with a grain of ~~salt~~ sugar.

[–] CouldntCareBear@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 months ago

Haha. Nah, you're good 😊 . Brits like beans because they're cheap, easy and available. They're ok, hardly a culinary experience worth seeking out though :)

Although they are one of your five a day!

Younger me might be disappointed in a lot of things, but my fascination with new and interesting foods would not be a disappointment at all! If I told me "We're really into brie and canning salsa" we'd be delighted!

My partner is British and we are in the US, so we end up hunting for stuff like this all the time. Luckily a market up the road happens to be owned by a Brit, so we can at least get tea biscuits there.

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I have no idea what makes a good vs bad tea biscuit, but that Indian grocer definitely sold those as well. Idk if that's just a random coincidence or if there's some overlap in Indian and British snacks, but if there are any Indian stores near you, you might have some luck there.

Also Indian food is fucking incredible, so even if you don't find what you're looking for, you WILL find something tasty!

[–] fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yes, Indian food is incredible, we are in agreement there. The best biscuits, in our opinion, are Dark Chocolate Digestives (blue package), dunked in breakfast tea just long enough to soften the chocolate. I prefer 3 bites. She prefers to take the whole thing and sho.. Well, you get it.

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

This might be sweeter than you prefer, but there is a dark chocolate flavor: you familiar with Tim Tams? Or more specifically, the 'tim tam slam'?

[–] fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Tim Tams yes (Australian, but they'll do haha), but never heard of the Tim tam slam...

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Aight drop what you're doing and get some tim tams and your favorite tea (or coffee... anything hot). Nibble off two opposing corners - just barely enough to break the cookie inside. Your tim tam is now a straw: dunk one end into your hot drink and suck until you feel hot fluid coming through: as soon as you feel fluid, flip the whole thing up and into your mouth *don't delay that last step, or the chocolate will just melt in your fingers and make a mess.

The tea will soak the cookie, and begin melting the chocolate and fillings if it's one of the flavors with fillings (the caramel one is my favorite for doing this).

[–] fmstrat@lemmy.nowsci.com 2 points 11 months ago

Well, guess we need to buy some Tim Tams. We do have Penguins..

I've moved over to Branston now. The last Heinz beans I had were horrible - watery sauce, not enough beans. Branston is the bomb.

Typically if someone asks me a very off key question like this, I assume it's because they want to be asked that question in order to start a conversation they have in mind. So I would usually give some answer: "I'm really enjoying baking bread right now, so I suppose flour."

Then ask "what about you?" Which is usually when the really interesting and often much more off key conversation starts. If not, I can start talking about baking bread, so it's win/win for me!

Dude, Newman's Own has a sourdough crust frozen pizza and it's amazing. It's now our go-to, "I'm too mentally drained to cook," food.

Grapefruit reacts badly with or nullifies a loooot of medications :/

[–] perishthethought@lemm.ee 10 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Gotta have something to believe in. Might as well be Luxardo cherries.

[–] MagicShel@lemmy.zip 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I mean... if you want to make a proper Old Fashioned...

[–] perishthethought@lemm.ee 4 points 11 months ago

Mind reader!

A choice of groceries? Mister Moneybags here has so many choices for his groceries he has the luxury of having a preference of some over others. Ladies, if you go home with this guy you get your choice of breakfast the next morning. /s

Seems like fine small talk to me.

[–] Monument@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Oh, man. A few months ago I, a quadragenarian dude, spent like 20 minutes telling a friend about my skin care routine. … when I have the gumption to do it.

Not a recent purchase, but Costco had these halloumi fries recently and they were bomb. I’m sad to see that I can’t buy them right now.

[–] Shapillon@lemmy.world 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

How do you use halloumi during your routine?

[–] Monument@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 11 months ago

On rough days I get high and eat too many of them. Helps fight wrinkles caused by furrowed brows.

[–] Vreyan31@reddthat.com 6 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I've literally overheard multiple dinner party conversations about good finds from trader joes

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

A fellow Trader Joe's lover definitely transcends the lame smalltalk boundary. I don't even go but the way my dad recommends food when he meets someone else who goes to Trader Joe's you would think they had known each other their whole life.

[–] sifr@retrolemmy.com 1 points 11 months ago

Trader Joe's is okay for some things. I like their cinnamon rolls and think they are worth the five dollars.

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Zucchini is pretty alright.

[–] TheBrideWoreCrimson@sopuli.xyz 2 points 11 months ago

And cucumbers... eggplants... squash... pineapple... 😊

[–] steal_your_face@lemmy.ml 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Colorado jack white cheddar popcorn. Literally the best popcorn I’ve ever had.

[–] MrsDoyle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 months ago

Full body shudder...

[–] MutilationWave@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 11 months ago

I'm eating kiwis every day, including the hairy skin.

[–] TedDallas@programming.dev 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I picked up some Tobasco Scorpion pepper sauce at Kroger. It’s no joke. Where are you going?

[–] klemptor@startrek.website 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Actually yes! Fresh basil. I'm making a bruschetta chicken dinner tonight.

[–] Lv_InSaNe_vL@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

I got a basil plant from Walmart a few months ago because it was literally the same price as the dried stuff.

I've been putting basil in basically everything haha

[–] over_clox@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

I had a couple eggs a few weeks ago, couldn't afford orange juice though. Today I can't even afford toilet paper. Don't ask why I'm not wearing any socks..

[–] davidgro@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

I was feeling extravagant recently and picked up some Blackberry Dr Pepper.

[–] GooberEar@lemmy.wtf 3 points 11 months ago

Foreign born tomatoes. Figured I better enjoy them while I can.

[–] LifeOfChance@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

I personally don't care much for sponsored foods but I acquired some post Malone oreos that are pretty good. They're super sweet though so 1 pack lasts like a month.

[–] Hikermick@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

I wouldn't lead with that but there's a lot of "foodies" out there. If you don't talk sports or the weather, food isn't a bad topic at a party. Everybody gotta eat

[–] PyroNeurosis@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 11 months ago

I'm a very simple being and my grocery tastes reflect that.

But I will grouse about changing the layout in the store for the rest of the night if you don't intervene.
