Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

⅗ of those already fit the statement. No I won't be elaborating on which.

Do you mean acronyms or initialisms? I can't think of any 3 letter acronyms which are groups or agencies. All the ones I can think of are initialisms.

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I know what an initialism is and I definitely know the difference! It's you who doesn't because you won't explain in detail real quick!

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Acronym is said like a word (NASA, FEMA). Initialism is just the letters (FBI, CIA).

Well, yeah, everyone knows that. Jerk.

I once genuinely got asked in the middle of a meeting with our client at work: "When will our SLA and KPI be BAU? Do we need more SQEP?" Had no idea what any of that meant other than SLA so just blagged my way out of that one.

I've got a friend that, when cornered by acronym soup, starts discussing very detailed analytics for whatever they're talking about. He says the acronyms don't matter as long as the audience is sufficiently bored by whatever your answer is.

[–] sxan@midwest.social 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Was your blagging successful? Did you come out the GOAT, or was it a SNAFU?

[–] Aggravationstation@feddit.uk 5 points 1 month ago

I think so. Nobody BBU so hopefully.

That’s the beauty and curse of language. It is constantly morphing and changing depending on public sentiment. I truly believe in another 40-60 years, “fuck” will be a perfectly normal word for a 6 year old to say instead of “oops”.

[–] Clinicallydepressedpoochie@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (3 children)

Oops and fuck do seem mostly interchangeable.

For example: "get oopsed"

Kinda clunky but still works.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 8 points 1 month ago

"get oopsed"

That's how we ended up with a 6 year old in the first place.

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I'm going to oops you silly

I think get oopsed has legs. Going to try it out on my kid next time he tries his luck with me in Nidhogg.

Why not 5-letter acronyms? I mean, "NSDAP"? Arguably the most evil acronym of all?

Just a lot more of them.

How could something positive like inclusion equality and diversity be used for evil? /s

There is no way that someone could take the joy doge brings and use it for evil. /s
