I’m also just here to admire the engineer who made the copy plural when multiple doors open. My fancy ass modern car doesn’t do it that.

[–] Infynis@midwest.social 12 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Yeah, it took me a long time to get this, because I was too impressed by the design lol

Correct pluralization and it shows which door is open!

This is what happens when someone who really focuses on UX designs your interface. Little details that not everyone notices, but the few that do really appreciate it.

[–] caseyweederman@lemmy.ca 3 points 9 months ago

One of my biggest pet peeves. Anything that I write that outputs words is gonna have a little pluralization function.

[–] eager_eagle@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago

first thing I noticed is that they bothered with the plural; it's loss, but an absolute win too

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It's not a jar it's a door silly

Given the age demographic on lemmy, there is a non-zero chance one of us will be in a shady acres nursing home with advanced dementia ranting about loss and scrawling strange symbols with mashed potatoes.

Oh fuck you got me

I've been on the internet for awhile, I even remember the ctrlaltdelete comic coming out. I can honestly say I don't ever remember seeing this meme before, or even the blowback from the comic itself. Weird how I can be on the net almost daily for years and still see new (old?) memes.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

In that case, the real question is: do you remember XKCD 1053?

You don't want to. It's an abstract reference to an uninteresting meme about miscarriage called 'Loss'.

People post things with the format of the position of the people in the meme in 4 frames ( I, II, II, I _), and everyone congratulates themselves and each other for getting the reference.

This one, however, doesn't work in my opinion. The door positions in frames 1, 2, and 3 are meant to indicate people standing, yet the same position of the right door in frame 4 apparently indicates a person lying down.

This, as it happens, is therefore not Loss.

[–] spooky2092@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

yet the same position of the right door in frame 4 apparently indicates a person lying down.

Check again friend, the back right door is open in panel 4, njt the same front right door.

It's hard to tell the difference, but it is different. Took me way too long to get the joke too cuz of that

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It's a different door but it's the same position. This doesn't work. If \ indicates a person standing it can't indicate a person lying down, whichever door it is.

[–] spooky2092@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

It's not the same position tho. If you look at the two images side by side, you can see the right door is noticeably lower than the left door in the final panel, but even in the previous panel:

[–] Diddlydee@feddit.uk 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

Position meaning 'the way in which something is placed or arranged'. I'm aware it's a different door, but the position / tilt / angle / pose / arrangement of the door is the same, being \ .Taking \ to indicate standing, it can't indicate lying down.

[–] spooky2092@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 9 months ago

Ok, so your complaint is the door orientation, not the position. I disagree with the idea that it doesn't necessarily work, given how many other instances of the meme get a bit out there and are intentionally setup to be recognizable yet inscrutable. But I can see why it wouldn't work for people.

Person uses artistic outlet to convey their sadness. Internet circle jerks about it for decades.

[–] ShellMonkey@lemmy.socdojo.com 0 points 9 months ago (1 children)
[–] takeda@lemm.ee 0 points 9 months ago (1 children)

That meme is fucking dumb.

[–] slackassassin@sh.itjust.works 2 points 9 months ago

It's the worst. Dude used his artistic outlet to convey an emotion and was shit on by a bunch of assholes. Then that became so popular that the meta and 'game' lived on. God forbid someone try to express themselves. People try to say "it was just so out of place" fuck that, dude didn't owe anyone shit.

[–] lemonuri@lemmy.ml 0 points 9 months ago (1 children)

When is a door not a door?

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 1 points 9 months ago

When it is a jar

[–] gon@lemm.ee 0 points 9 months ago (2 children)

This one took me a while to figure out... Embarrassing.......

[–] Bishma@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 9 months ago

I think I was stunned by a car company that would bother to conditionally pluralize doors on a dot matrix LCD screen. I'm so used to the companies now, cutting every corner no matter how many times they've been cut before.

It's loss. The loss meme?

Hence the post title... "I am at a loss of words"
