I blame the consolidation of sports titles under a limited number of developers and publishers. But maybe I just feel this way because sports games aren't my thing.

Rocket League feels more like a sports game than simulations sports games to me.
Yeah, rocket league is a sport game more than anything else, technically.
And, yeah, most rpgs are going to be better than all but the best sports games. It's the sameness factor. One baseball game is much like another in what you'll see and do on screen.
Not that rpgs can't get samey, but they're less so
I would rather play NBA jam on SNES than any 7/10 RPG.
But NBA Jam is a game, not a bundle of perverse incentives disguised as a game.
You're describing a 1/10 sports game. We're talking about 10/10 sports games.

Out of interest, what are you missing?
Not OP, but the community used to be so much better before. Game is fun, begun playing it on launch, but quit about three years ago because the people that play it are pretty toxic nowadays. Also, can't trade stuff now. Some people really enjoyed that aspect of the game (not me, but still). A shame there isn't anything else like it.
Is 1/10 the best or 10/10 is the best?
I miss Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle Cars, personally. Feels like it lost a little heart when they turned it into Rocket League
True wisdom is realizing that most sports games are just a sub-genre of RPG.
