Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

“Today, under President Trump, begins a renaissance in this Nation,” Landry said in a written statement. “One where America and her people will always come first. In Louisiana, we think that is worthy of celebrating!”

The staunch Trump ally invited fellow Louisianans to raise MAGA flags on Inauguration Day. Landry had previously ordered flags on state buildings set at half-staff in honor of the 14 people killed in a New Year’s terror attack in New Orleans.

Trump’s inauguration fell on the day of mourning Landry initially set aside for British national Edward Pettifer, the stepson of Prince William’s former nanny. A Landry spokesperson told The Associated Press that state flags would now be lowered for Pettifer on Jan. 24.

If it was Pete Buttigieg getting inaugurated and California encouraged people to fly pride flags, all the MAGAs would lose their shit.

Louisiana is the second poorest state in the country. They have a poverty rate of 18.65%. The people of Louisiana probably shouldn’t be celebrating this incoming administration because that poverty rate is only going to get worse.

Louisiana is like the Afghanistan of America. If you've ever been you know... If you haven't, I advise you not to go.

But but he's going to drain the swamp and make the rich pay their share and bring back the jobs and fix insurance and poop gold and

It's funny you'd think that people from Louisiana would know a thing or two about swamps and what lives there.

The President of the United States is anti American. Let that sink in.

They should just be honest and fly the Confederate flag.

Forgive my ignorance, but why the fuck were they going to lower their flags for a foreigner's nanny's stepson?

The right wing urge to reinforce social hierarchies? I think they just reflexively love anything connected to a white monarchy

He was apparently one of the victims in the New Orleans attack.

My only guess is he wanted to disrespect Jimmy Carter by going half staff for a (mostly) random person.

There are times I wish I was ignorant enough to be able to make statements like this.

Another reason this is so offensive -

MAGA/America First, etc, this isn’t the first time it’s been used in American politics. Trump didn’t invent it - see Warren G. Harding in 1920: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_presidential_campaign_slogans

What’s so disgraceful, especially in this case, is that as a result of this type of attitude, foreign languages were banned from being taught in public schools. Mostly German, as a result of WWI, but in 1921 the Louisiana state constitution was amended to also ban French. https://bayoutechedispatches.blogspot.com/2024/10/banned-in-classroom-how-state-of.html?m=1

This was a disaster for the Cajun culture in that state. Landry and Johnson should understand this more than most - it’s a slap in the face to what happened to their (and my) parents and grandparents.

The fact that Landry is bragging about it…I can’t even explain how bad it is.
