Fuck you too, Lisa.

The next hardware manufacturer saying "Actually, we do GPUs for gaming" will be King/Queen of the world.

Also "Luigi, we need you so bad."

[–] ragebutt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 7 minutes ago

that manufacturer would have a fraction of the sales. They’re all doing this because data centers buy way contracts are simply more lucrative; the planned rollout of data centers means they’ll sell so much more that they simply can’t accommodate enthusiasts and home builds

This is of course the goal of people like Altman and bezos, they want to hoard compute after hoarding 99+% of all the wealth amongst like 50 people. This is why resistance to data center rollouts is so important and to a further step fair distribution of resources as a political platform. This mess wouldn’t exist if oligarchs were reigned in

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 27 minutes ago

Not gonna happen any time soon. The barrier of entry is massive.

Making decent drivers alone is a humongous undertaking: You have to catch up to the work of several decades - and it's a moving target. That's on top of just how difficult it is to design good silicon. Just look at how Chinese GPU manufacturers are struggling to match low-end cards from 10 years ago (even though they are lying and claiming they are matching high-end cards from one generation ago) with cards that have many times the power draw and cost - and all of that with far worse games compatibility.

Hell, even the giant that is (soon to be probably: was) Intel failed to leave a mark in the dedicated GPU business and they actually have decades of experience making (pretty shitty) integrated GPUs and (even shittier) drivers for them.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago

Good to know. You stand by that, yes?

[–] nastronot@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 hour ago

She’s right though. Look at their revenue. Data centers are 10x their gaming division.

Gaming pulls in less than 1B profit a year. An absolute drip compared to their Datacenter business.

I’m surprised they bother with gaming at all once you realize what a side project it basically is for them in terms of revenue.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 12 points 7 hours ago

What a cunt.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 29 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

remember she is related to Huang, by cousin.

[–] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 33 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

Wut? Wait. The AMD CEO is the cousin of the nvidia CEO? Like, the CEO of the number two GPU chip company is cousin of the number one company y, and effectively there isn't really a number three so this GPU market really is really a family monopoly?

[–] Sina@beehaw.org 4 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

It's pretty f. weird that Lisa Su is the CEO despite being so closely related to Jensen, I would dislike this if I were an AMD investor. However this is not a family monopoly, since neither Su or Jensen own these companies, not substantially anyway. (well below 1% & 3 something % owned respectively) Meaning of shareholders at large disliked Lisa Su's way of doing things, she would be booted without too many hurdles I would think & the same is true for Jensen.

Welcome to late stage capitalism! Market fundamentalism was always a lie, the american dream has been dead for over a century.

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 27 minutes ago (1 children)

Both are from Taiwan though.

[–] Garfunkel@lemmy.ca 1 points 15 minutes ago

I wonder why that matters, most oligarchs are from a diaspora.

[–] chunes@lemmy.world 32 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

At this point, we're gonna need Valve to get into the GPU business or else PC gaming is going to collapse

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Once I tried to design my own open-source GPU architecture.

BTW if anyone wants to reuse the name "VideoDSP" for the shader cores, then feel free to do it.

[–] jagermo@feddit.org 12 points 8 hours ago

Not really. With AAA maybe, but there are millions of great games out there that run on basically phone hardware. And with valve creating a translation layer for x86 to arm, all of them are basically in reach.

[–] Kichae@lemmy.ca 31 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

I don't suppose there's a way for someone to get inside AMD and irritate its innards in a way that will maake it hork ATI back up, is there?

[–] SkyeStarfall@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 3 hours ago

As if ATI would have been any better if they still existed

Companies are companies are companies. They don't exist to serve you, they serve capital

[–] Baggie@lemmy.zip 8 points 12 hours ago

Only one way to find out

[–] Necrifyre@piefed.blahaj.zone 46 points 16 hours ago

This just in - more CEOs shitting all over everything that was once nice.

Booo. Glad I sold all my AMD stock. Fuck you, Lisa.

[–] Sina@beehaw.org 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Statements like this are good for the stock price & have little impact on how the company is actually operating. (not claiming AMD is doing so great serving its consumer user base though)

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Brooo I was planning to buy some more. Fucking hell, nothing is safe

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

even TMSC is considering to be all in on AI.

[–] DdCno1@beehaw.org 1 points 25 minutes ago

They win no matter how this AI thing pans out. Probably the company that is the safest from an AI bubble bursting (although not the safest in general due to their geographical location).

[–] NekoKoneko@lemmy.world 71 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

She's not Jensen Huang's cousin for nothing.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 5 points 7 hours ago

"...if you believe—which I do, deeply—that computing in many ways equates to intelligence. So the more compute you have, the more intelligent you are..."

Why did nobody in the room interrupt at this point and challenge the validity of the assertion. Sick of these people getting away with spouting nonsense

Glad the article goes on to disagree but i want to see these challenges happening in real time.

"my product equl intellegence, more product? Basically bigger brain." Is crazy unsubtle marketing.

[–] absquatulate@lemmy.world 84 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (3 children)

Pack it up boys, it's done. No GPUs for PCs in a few years. Hope at least the chinese step up their game

[–] TheMightyCat@ani.social 49 points 20 hours ago

I mean the Chinese already did step up their game

And over the horizon, I see AI and super intelligence becoming more and more essential to every aspect of our lives and every aspect of our business.

AI and super intelligence?

[–] yukichigai@kbin.earth 50 points 20 hours ago

She's the winningest at buzzword bingo. That makes line go up.

[–] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 29 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

She is hedging her bets using the Trump label “SI” and the Tech Bro brand “AI.”

Technically, these are both technical terms, but we are way, way past the point of their usage being tied to their meaning.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 4 points 7 hours ago

and boosted by her cousin , Jensen who is selling the shovel.

Was talking to my son, after the announcement of Sony wanting to buy our unused PS5. Money is we won't see a PS6 because AI is getting all the ram that even Sony can't make a PS6 because of AI. Got to love it. I hope all these companies go bankrupt and we get ram for pennies afterwards.

[–] iamthetot@piefed.ca 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Just read the other day that Sony says PS6 is on track. Granted, of course they'd say that. Also, there's rumours it'll be more mobile focused.

[–] Fredselfish@lemmy.world 3 points 10 hours ago

Like on our mobile phones? Yeah I doubt we see a true PS6. Regardless I bought my last one which is the 5. Only one I will buy next is a PS2. Beyond that sticking to PC only games.

[–] jld@lemmy.zip 43 points 20 hours ago

When the time comes, I will remember.
