this is just an ad

[–] NABDad@lemmy.world 13 points 23 hours ago

Two of my three kids are allergic to peanuts, so it was necessary for me and my wife to destroy any candy that contained peanuts.

It was difficult, but for the safety of our children we eliminated the candy in the only way we know.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 10 points 1 day ago

Is this an ad?

OH BOY I LOVE {product.id().name}! ITS SO {random.choice(product.descriptors)}!

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 55 points 1 day ago (8 children)

I’ve never understood this, steal your kids treats? You’re an adult and can just buy the candy when ever you want.

[–] Raiderkev@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

My kids don't eat a ton of candy. They go trick or treating and get a truck load of it which they will never eat. I have taken some here and there. Halloween candy usually lasts us til summer.

You know the kids have too much sweets so you eat some of them. Not a big deal.

One or two is a tax. Robbing the whole bag of "the good stuff" is being an asshole.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

Yeah, my kids are well aware of the Dad Tax. They're prepared for life.

[–] plantfanatic@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Tax is a portion, not the entirety of a batch. This is just being a selfish ass.

My kids just give me the ones I like and keep a couple if they still like them.

Why do wives eat French fries off their husbands' plates when they could just order their own? Because it doesn't count if you didn't order it. Those fries may as well be in international waters. Same with kids candy.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

I do it because I'd want 3-4 fries at most and it's a waste to get an entire order of fries for that.

[–] mrgoosmoos@lemmy.ca 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

you are an exception, I think.

in my experience, people want like half the order

which is often fine, because some places give you way too many potatoes

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 3 points 15 hours ago

You try them and then you want more sometimes but it's unreasonable to take more when you're sharing with someone else. If you treat your husband that way, he may think you have no respect for him and for me, personally, that would be devastating. Most people don't think about that and they should.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

My kids don't need to be eating all that candy, it's no good for them. I'm making a sacrifice. For them.

[–] themoken@startrek.website 17 points 1 day ago (4 children)

It's hard to buy candy for yourself as an adult because you know it's nothing but love handles and tooth decay in shiny wrappers. But if it comes into your orbit once a year without buying it, it's tempting.

Of course, when my kid was small he basically didn't bother eating it at all. He'd get like 100 pieces of candy and they'd linger around until Christmas. When I was a kid we'd get pillowcases full and it'd be gone in days. Not sure if that's a generational thing or if my son was just not very motivated by sweets.

[–] starik@lemmy.today 1 points 14 hours ago

Tooth decay? Not if you brush regularly

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 1 points 18 hours ago

So you buy extra for the trick or treaters and what's left is your hoard.

[–] I_Fart_Glitter@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

That was me in the 80s. I think part of it was that my mom was a health nut so we’d never get that stuff except for holidays and the impulse was to save it. But I’d forget about it and she’d throw it away at Christmas. Same thing with Christmas candy, throw it out at Easter.

[–] Iunnrais@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

As a kid, I’d hoard Halloween candy and eat it one bit at a time over the course of months. My parents never threw it out, and I’d typically still have some of last year’s candy when the next Halloween came round. Chocolate never goes bad, in the sense that it is dangerous to eat it— it just separates out which might not taste as good, but if you don’t mind that, it’s fine to keep around. I was fine with it. And of course, my favorites were always the hard candies and other sugar based ones, not the chocolate anyway.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 1 points 14 hours ago

halloween candy gets you to christmas candy gets you to valentines candy gets you to easter candy gets you to

summer!

[–] crandall@lemmy.today 9 points 1 day ago

Buying them is admitting you have a problem.

[–] TheMinions@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

One of my kids is allergic to milk & gluten so their candy stash is basically always reduced by 30-70%.

If I give that candy to the other kid (thing 2 is much younger) it’s not healthy for anyone to eat that much candy. Let alone someone less than 5.

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

You're basically taking a bullet for them.

[–] gibmiser@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Have you seen how much candy kids get at Halloween? Its too much. You gotta spread that shit out - or take some away. Its just too goddamn much.

[–] troybot@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

It's better for your teeth if you eat it all at once. Or at least that's what I tell myself.

[–] SadSadSatellite@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 1 day ago (3 children)

The inclusion of the full name and capitalizing the Peanut Butter Cups is telling me this is an ad. So is the unnecessary inclusion of the photo.

I feel like a person making a joke would have just said peanut butter cups, or reeses cups, or maybe just reeses.

A non-marketing individual would have been more likely to find a photo of someone with chocolate on their face, rather than a glamour shot of a twix.

And only speculation, but the person in the profile pic doesn't look like the type to make this age-group of joke.

All of that aside, the basis of the conversation is it's own issue, it implies that both parents have gone through their kids candy for their own reasons, and one found the results interesting enough to bring it up later. Not that this is an actual scenario that happened.

Thank my TED.

[–] cattywampas@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

It's an ad for two different companies?

[–] TheTetrapod@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago

That's not how you spell Reese's, you silly goose.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

If it really were marketing copy, they'd spell it right.

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago

Or not, for eNgAGeMeNt

[–] Dozzi92@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm not sure if I agree. They're pretty shady with all this stuff. My brother's general counsel at some major candy maker, and for some reason his role at one point included content approvals, and they're just sneaky. Now I'm interested in confirming if that's one of their tricks.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Improper trademarking is a pretty big no-no.

Wait. There are people that actively seek out Twix? Fake news.

[–] farmgineer@nord.pub 2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

I took my wife to the US to meet my family after we got married. It was before halloween so there were tons of cheap variety bags of candy. We bought one of each to take back, snack on, and give out as gifts. Her favorite was twix.

[–] darthsundhaft@piefed.social 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

We're all noticing the veiny texture on the candy, right? No? Just me? K

[–] PapaStevesy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

That's what they look like, or how they used to look anyway. I feel like the ridges have gotten smoother in the last decade.
