Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must begin with TIL. Linking to a source of info is optional, but highly recommended as it helps to spark discussion.

** Posts must be about an actual fact that you have learned, but it doesn't matter if you learned it today. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.**

Rule 2- Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your post subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Posts and comments which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding non-TIL posts.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-TIL posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

Rule 7- You can't harass or disturb other members.

If you vocally harass or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

For further explanation, clarification and feedback about this rule, you may follow this link.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

The the “s” in IoT

[–] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 39 points 2 days ago (2 children)

you won't believe what the W stands for in WINE.

There recursive acronyms: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recursive_acronym

[–] stickyprimer@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago

_ Nested_ recursive acronyms, even!

This inspired the two MIT Lisp Machineeditors called EINE ("EINE Is Not Emacs", German for one) and ZWEI("ZWEI Was EINE Initially", German for two)

[–] vortexsurfer@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

My favorite is GNU Hurd, a mutually recursive acronym!

Wait till you learn what the G in GNU stands for

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 41 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Full name is Personal Home Page: Hypertext Preprocessor.

Why does it sounds like videogame title.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 25 points 2 days ago (2 children)

[–] bhamlin@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Businesses have feelings too, apparently

[–] daychilde@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Yes, things change, hence the hindsight redefinition of what PHP stands for.

[–] idealotus@lemmy.world 17 points 2 days ago (3 children)

YAML does this too. YAML Ain't Markup Language.

[–] crunchy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Huh. For some reason i thought it was Yet Another Markup Language. But yours is more on brand.

[–] blackberry28@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That was the original meaning. It got changed at some point.

[–] MouldyCat@feddit.uk 5 points 1 day ago

oh interesting, as that's what PHP did too. Originally it was just a set of shell scripts for creating "Personal Home Pages" and it gradually grew into the beautiful swan it is today <3

You’re thinking of YACC.

WINE Is Not an Emulator

[–] yopyop@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 days ago

Same for the mp3 encoder :

Following the great history of GNU naming, LAME originally stood for LAME Ain't an Mp3 Encoder.

GNU does it a lot, for some reason that lot find it hugely entertaining

Do they still do it? Thought it was the meme/fad of the 80s/90s.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 13 points 2 days ago

GNU stands for GNU's Not Unix.

[–] myyass@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

I thought it stood for PCP.

[–] mlg@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

There's a joke in here about them essentially covering up the old name and PHP's reputation but I don't feel like starting a sledge thread over PHP when JavaScript is right there lol.

[–] Obi@sopuli.xyz 5 points 2 days ago (2 children)

But what does the P in that one stand for?

[–] tourist@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I see that, too, are a card carrying member of the PEN15 club.

[–] StabbingSky@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

Preprocessor

[–] Taleya@aussie.zone 4 points 2 days ago

It's exploits all the way down.

[–] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You should look up "Wine" (the window emulator for Linux)

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

the window emulator

But Wine is not an emulator

[–] elvith@feddit.org 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Funny how "Wine Is Not an Emulator" spells out Wine, don't you think?

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Or maybe it could be Wine Is aN Emulator...

Really makes you think...
