Palmer Luckey of Anduril is teaming with Ben Lamm of Colossal Biosciences to launch Warhound, a startup dedicated to genetically engineering and cloning dogs for service in war, police work and first responder work.

Speaking to Wired, Lamm explained that the project was twofold. One part of the project would oversee the genetic engineering and cloning of the ideal dogs for war, and the other would develop tech for them to use on battlefields.

When they bark, do genetically engineered bees come out?

Man, it’s such a good thing people are going hungry so we can have these things!

/s.

He got high and played War Dogs and thought "What if we had actual war dogs?" and then decided to raise money to abuse animals. The future is so stupid.

Spend money for gene engineering to cure cancers: ❌
Spend money to genetically engineer dogs to kill people ✅

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

CRISPR has raised tens of billions in money for cancer gene therapy. 2021 saw private venture investors spending $12.1 Billion, not including public funding which has totaled in the billions.

This still does not cancel out what i said, spending money to make genenetically engineered dogs to kill people is utterly stupid when you could finance more research to actual useful things that gene engineering do: curing genetic illnesses, discover if they can replicate axolotl's regeneration on other animals, see why the heck some animals just have lower chances of gettin cancer, find out if we can speed up wound healing (or prevent scars!) And all this stuff

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Well, it does lol. You said they don’t spend money on cancer gene therapy, when the fact is they spend hundreds of times the amount of this headline on it.

I think it’s morally bankrupt to fund genetic research on war dogs in general, but that’s a completely different argument and is irrelevant to the conversation about cancer therapy.

You could literally say the same thing about any money spent. Why spend money on battery research for EVs when you could spend that on cancer research?

The two are not related.

I was talking about this rich idiot not everyone, it also was the forst thing that came in mind because you could use generic engineering to combat some cancers

[–] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago

Well if you read the community notes on it, this money isn’t even towards the genetic part. It’s to fund armor to protect the dogs in the field lol.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca -1 points 11 hours ago

Very little of that $12B is for gene therapy, because very little of gene therapy is actually working.

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 9 points 16 hours ago

I swear I can smell this guy's photos. 🤢

[–] LittleBorat3@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago

He thinks that life is a video game, that's why his avatar looks like that. Also shitty video game ideas.

[–] mHtt@lemmy.ca 18 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (2 children)

cant they leave the dogs alone, dont they just want to be loved and get tummy rubs?

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 4 points 11 hours ago

The Nazis bred Dobermans and Shepards to be used by military. Coincidence?

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 7 points 21 hours ago

Yes. Can confirm. Mine also likes snacks.

[–] W3dd1e@lemmy.zip 13 points 21 hours ago

I hate Palmer Lucky as much as I hate Stephen Miller.

[–] halferect@lemmy.world 9 points 21 hours ago

How do I get money? I got a idea lasers on freaking sharks!!!! I'll take my 200 million in cash please

[–] pigup@lemmy.world 23 points 1 day ago

So much animal abuse

[–] CalypsoGirl@lemmy.today 18 points 1 day ago (3 children)

But we already have robodogs. Boston Dynamics has been soft-launching them for years, innoculating the masses into adoring them & accepting them before unveiling their full wrathful capabilities. Why breed & abuse living creatures when we already have terrifying robots to do bloodshed for us?

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 11 hours ago

Boston dynamics is thankfully mostly useless bullshit. Dancing robots won't run a factory.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Boston Dynamics has been soft-launching them for years

Boston Dynamics made a robodog that doesn't immediately trip over it's own feet on gravel and has a thirty minute active runtime before it needs a two hour recharge.

Then they've dropped a fuckton on marketing and lobbying to keep the investment cash pouring in.

Dancing robots jumping around. Show me a robot placing something into a box after it fell to the ground. I'm sure with another 50 million one can hand you a screwdriver.

Because billionaires are bored sycophants with zero empathy.

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Embarrassed to remember liking this guy as early VR adopter. Imagine trading priviledge of pioneering VR to building war machines. What a piece of shit.

[–] KullumDaue@lemmy.world 5 points 20 hours ago

if it makes you feel any better, i bet gabe newell and john carmack are feeling much worse 😹

for God sake, facebook advised him to do damage control by donating to someone on the opposite side of the political aisle, and he sued them for it! (according to Wikipedia he got at least 100 million out of that).

[–] BeMoreCareful@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago

Just sucking up government cash under a veneer of credibility.

All the army dogs propaganda was to white wash the military's image dumbass.

[–] kSPvhmTOlwvMd7Y7E@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

investors have a mandate they have to follow. if it says "invest N% into AI" they will throw money at anyone who has "ai" in their mission statement. same for "Defense".

These fucking techbros are louder and trying to normalize unethical behavior under this regime being asked to remove regulation from all of their activities.

That is what a corporate dystopia really is. Laws for all but not for them.

[–] burgermeister@sh.itjust.works 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Where the fuck did this guy come from

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 2 points 20 hours ago

Some dank crevasse under the seat of a taxi cab.

[–] ZILtoid1991@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Palmer Luckey woke up and said:

That's it, I'm inventing bad dogs!

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 2 points 10 hours ago

Maybe he's just giving dogs testosterone.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago

Dude...sigh... What. Come on.

[–] arc99@lemmy.world 15 points 1 day ago (3 children)

This is the same Colossal Biosciences which has been outright lying about recreating extinct species to drum up cash from investors. And when you look at some of the stuff they're pretending to do for this goal, e.g. artificial eggshells for dodos, it is quite obvious they have ulterior intentions.

[–] ms_lane@lemmy.world 1 points 17 hours ago

Will he spare any expense?

So he can get 200 million for dogs of war but I can't get it for knots of peace?

Insanity....

[–] NotAnOtter@lemmus.org 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 13 hours ago) (2 children)

We already "genetically engineers war dogs". And for police work. And for individual self protection.

[–] Kurtismayfield@lemmy.zip 1 points 16 hours ago

Yeah but the words " selective breeding" and "Dogs that are slightly stronger and smarter every generation " doesn't get you $ 200,000,000.

The Romans did this already, it's called a "mastiff" and it has been used in war for many centuries

GTA III called, they want their main protagonists shirt back.

[–] Hueristic_Autistic@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago (5 children)

Or like they could just design robot dogs.
