Trying to come up with my MtF name change.

It's really pretty and goes decent with my last name, but it sounds similar to "ghislaine" and that's unfortunate.

Would the association have been a deal-breaker for you? Or would other people not even notice it?

Edit: Genuienly apprexiate the answers. I decided to slowly start using Elaine within small friend groups etc. Really excited!

I think it sounds nice and I would have never thought of associating this with Ghislaine ever lol

Elaine... As in Elaine Marley?

Elaine Marley, as in the governor of Melee Island in the game Monkey Island?

image

The very badass Elaine Marley that was probably the first woman in computer games to actually have some form of agency? (Okay, I think Samus was first, but still, governor Marley must have been the second one)

Naming yourself after the snarky pirate queen, governor Marley, is absolutely okay! She's an exceptionally good-hearted woman. And has a healthy self-esteem. And is stylish.

Here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgRIXntFhww&t=191m47s

Unless, of course, you think it's a bad omen that governor Marley ends up married with a wannabe pirate who is extremely good in solving problems in very creative ways and can hold their breath for 10 full minutes!

I've always been a big fan of Elaine :)

EDIT: How does a role model get better from this?

It does call Seinfeld to mind, but it's a pretty name with the benefit of not making me immediately suspect trans

Never would've connected the two had you not said it. The first thought that came to mind before I got to that other name was the character from the old sitcom Seinfeld, which is odd because I hardly ever watched it.

I think it's a fine choice.

Twin sister :0

When I was thinking of names I could come up with a reason for every single one to not use it because it rhymed with something or other, or was close to somerhing else I didn't like etc.

For example, kids can come up with a way to twist most any name into some insult.

So don't sweat it too much. When I think of the name Elaine, I immediately think of Elaine from Seinfeld. Elaine is a decent name.

Maybe it doesn't quite fit and your brain is coming up with something to make you think harder about it. But either way, you'll get there eventually.

I spent a good couple three months on this conundrum. It's a puzzler.

Elaine sounds pretty and, to me, closer to Helene. Is ghislaine such a common name nowadays'?

[–] irotsoma@piefed.blahaj.zone 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm guessing she's referring to Ghislaine Maxwell and not wanting that connection. But I never would have made that connection at all.

Oh ! Yeah me neither … but I can see why she would avoid such proximity at all !

My mother's middle name was Elaine and I have an aunt with that name too. I always thought it was a good feminine name.

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Ooh I was also wondering if the name stopped being used, thank you for the info!!

[–] jahtnamas@slrpnk.net 4 points 3 days ago

i think it's fine. elaine doesn't actually rhyme with ghislaine, which is pronounced more like if you said "glen" as two syllables.

It makes me think of the character from Seinfeld. Not necessarily a bad thing.

Who or what is Ghislaine?

In any case, Elaine (and variations of it like Laine) is a beautiful name :3

[–] Cyanity@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Ghislaine Maxwell is a British convicted child sex trafficker and former socialite. In 2021, she was convicted of child sex trafficking, and in 2022 was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Accomplice to Jeffrey Epstein.

I would never associate the name Elaine with that though.

Yuck, thanks for the info.
