Yes, multiple progress bars to fill up! With extra rewards for filling them up! And seasonals! Jesus, this will be incredibly addictive to many.
Other side of the coin: the change to the completionist showcase, and just all of it as well I guess, is finally giving me the onus to break my cheevo addiction and go back to gaming for the sake of gaming.
Interesting way to get people interested in Left 4 Dead 2 again.
I mean, to this day no other game does what it does nearly as well as it does. And with the VR mod? Goddamn.
I never pay attention to them. I find it interesting that people do.
Well for those that like them, I can really see why you would like this system better.
It's always interesting to see people get like legitimately upset about being unable to get an achievement.
Like... Just don't? Nobody is making you do this.
Almost seems like a sort of compulsion.
Drives playtime up and keeps people on the Steam platform.
This is good especially for things like Paradox games which was essentially p2w requiring all the DLC be able to get 100% completion. That's still the case, but it would be better to know when you're at 100% with all the expansions you currently have, or events you participated in.
You're right, but I'm still gonna be at 0% because I'm still not playing ironman
CK3 has achievements enabled on non-ironman
How are achievements the "win" in your p2w extreme?
In Cities Skylines for example, in the game itself you decide when you've won enough, there's not a specific point when the game tells you you've won and you can stop playing now, so many players consider getting all achievements as completing the game. But some of the achievements are only possible to complete with certain DLC. An achievement "Make a Hot-Air Balloon Line" can only be done if you have the DLC letting you create Hot-Air Balloon lines, and so if you can't do 30% of the achievements because of DLC you don't have, the maximum completion you can attain without paying is 70%. In the prior format at times it might not be clear which achievements required DLC, including hidden ones. New scoped format is an improvement.
I'm not saying it's not better, just confused how its "p2w" when achievements are completely optional and don't effect gameplay or anything.
Not Rentlar, but what I got out of it is having the achievements locked behind paid DLC being shown despite not owning the DLC makes them feel more p2w than not for completionists by virtue of devs saying you haven't 100% the game without all paid DLC.
I just.... Why even care? Just play the Paradox game and enjoy it?
"Stop enjoying the game wrong and just play like me!!!!!"
That's really cool! It does require developers to go through and set it all up though. I wonder if the DLC ones can be done automatically?
(Not at my PC so can't check stuff)
As of now, the only game in my library that supports it is Euro Truck Simulator 2. The Witcher 3 (even with the new remastered update) doesn't have this feature and also doesn't categorize it into DLC-specific achievements for example.
ooh ets2 is the game I immediately thought of when I saw this! this might motivate me to finally try to get more achievements in it
I don't know how it could be, because AFAIK this data point is exactly what's missing. The only heuristic would be "was achievement XYZ added before or after DLC ABC released?", but that's gonna be inaccurate in tons of cases.
YESSSSSSSSSS!
I've already seen (almost) this exact model with RetroAchevements subsets and it is indeed an improvement. It's not just about having organized achievements, but mastering a base set and skipping the grind set is a nice touch. (They also do multi sets, glitch sets, challenge sets, etc).
RA is a bit strict on guidelines though, like all achievements being single player unless in a multiplayer subset, etc, which would be a good model for games with multiplayer modes that go defunct. Too bad I don't see many developers going back and making that adjustment, though.
It would be cool if there was a way for community to contribute to categorising achievements. It's not like it takes technical skills, it's just sorting things into boxes. That way for old games with abandoned developers someone could still fix it up
Yeah, crowd sourcing is nice but it's probably a little more complex. DLC should be easy, as would be game collections, but devs can also buff up some of the smaller categories like multiplayer, which might have been minimized in initial release. Plus I think they want game competition trophies.
Even RA doesn't go beyond taking suggestions from community; they have an approval process for people who can edit sets, badge artwork and so on. With a for profit front end like steam, you add legal to the mix. Hopefully it gets the same support from devs as trading cards and emoji got.
This is neat. Looking forward to it.
Hey I get 100% on base game Cult of the Lamb again!
As long as I can turn it off. I don't get the draw for achievements/trophies.
There's nothing to "turn off". It's just a different way to group/categorize achievements. If you're already ignoring them then you won't see anything different.
No, you can turn off notifications for achievements and it's basically turned off.
