Sees thumbnail... skip.

I DGAF who the creator is. If you use a video thumbnail that screams "engagement bait", then I'm going anywhere else.

It’s Linus tech tips. They even have a video talking about how they don’t really want to do it, but it works, iirc.

What a fantastic ecosystem that has been built!

Unfortunately thumbnails/titles are everything, and this style works. YouTube tried (and somewhat succeeded) in making it better by rewarding engaged views, but now they've taken a step backwards by hiding that metric.

Of course, I'm the only one who watches YouTube the correct way, bookmarking the subscriptions tab, adding all of the videos from my creators to my watch later, then watching that playlist. I only hit up the home tab if I run out of stuff to watch.

For me it was seeing Linus talking about Linux that made me want to skip... Wonder what he screwed up this time and blames the system instead of the user

[–] JustARaccoon@lemmy.world 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

he never blamed Linux, he put the blame on pop os for shipping a broken DE to stable, though he also saw issues with other distros which didn't make it fully in the vids.

also let's be honest the steam thing was also stupid that it would brick his DE before. there's defending Linux against hate and there's defending poor UX and leadership choices against any criticism.

This. There are so many excellent reasons to dislike Linus, but the way Pop_OS! screwed him over (yes, that way around) isn't one of them.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

Yep, thats why I hate when people bring that up, because I have to defend him, which I am loathe to do with how much I hate him lol

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago

For me seeing Linus's face makes me want to skip, lol

I'm not a fan on the channel either generally, but as I remember they didn't do anything unusual? Just installed some things and the distro broke itself.

If someone can break it by just doing average things a user would do, that's not really the users fault.

That’s a personal issue. The thumbnail isn’t to blame for that

[–] sunsofold@lemmy.zip 12 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Not wanting to engage in or encourage the process of social harm is not a 'personal issue.'

[–] Arcane2077@sh.itjust.works 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Calling a thumbnail you don’t personally like “social harm” is certifiably insane

[–] sunsofold@lemmy.zip 2 points 5 days ago

It seems you don't understand what they're talking about. It's not about the individual thumbnail and personal taste regarding the one individual image. It's about the class of thumbnails that utilise/follow the 'clickbait' model, a system of manipulation developed and actively encouraged by the attention economy of ad-based media which has a broadly pleasant-feeling but long term negative effects on the users and society.

This video is terribly made. It doesn't answer the question. It doesn't even try.

[–] terabyterex@lemmy.world 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

its a bad question. its a case by case thing. you can ask "does baldur's gate 3 use less ram on linux" and even that, to what extent? what causes the less usage? is it enough to drop a ram stick?

[–] Eyck_of_denesle@lemmy.zip 3 points 5 days ago

I agree. They could've just tested with 16gb ram instead to see how much the windows bloatware affects the performance. They do 32gb and use near 16gb ram and any good would use the remaining ram. It doesn't make sense why they mentioned the 16gb minimum requirement, play games that nearly require 16gb ram but on a 32gb ram.

I remember Linus making a video about setting up 2 unifi nanobeams. He made it sound like rocket science, whereas, in real life, it's easier than it sounds

Also, same guy who gave away the billet labs prototype unit after he dissed it, and whose staff acknowledged they did a crap job after he was caught out by Steve

So yeah... Nah....

By the way, for anyone who hasn't set up point to point networks before, it really is just as simple as setting them both to the same SSID and pointing them at one another, and checking the RX strength and TX strength

It definitely wasn't worthy of a long video...
