Be nice. Assume others have good intent (within reason).

Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Sadly not true, people will tear apart the smallest mistakes.

Here's a happy chappy regardless

[–] Anarki_@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 19 hours ago

No, I'd rather see this than slop.

A very dappy happy chappy!

I am practising making cakes

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I'd reply with the Patrick Stewart "Sexy Cakes" snl skit but unfortunately it also has Rob Schneider in it.

Still, sexy cake though!

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago

I read this comment chain backwards and I'm SO relieved you were talking about Schneider

Yeah, it's a shame (although unsurprising) that he turned out to be a cunt

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What could be more charming than a cake made with this much genuine feeling?

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The best thing is that my fiancée made a joke about a cake like this, so I have been practising it for her birthday

The guys I work with have now enjoyed many cakes and agree that I have it dialled in perfectly

She's going to be so surprised!

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 6 points 1 day ago

That's so special, I love it!

last week i saw a person at uni reading a book on their computer like this. i wanted to take a picture but then i remembered it’s more fun, funnier, and more respectful to just doodle it afterwards :3

Doodle on line paper of a person reading a book on their laptop. The laptop is open and held, rotated like how one typically reads books, with the screen (and the book’s contents) on the left and the laptop’s keyboard and trackpad on the right.

[–] festnt@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

this is the best ad for having a laptop i've ever seen

im gonna buy the smallest and cheapest one i can find just to go to my uni's library and read books like that

this is why I got the laptop with removable keyboard

Officer Kutalowski, the Anti-slop cop, approves of this post and it's comment section. Carry on Kittyzens!

[–] one_old_coder@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I would read a comic with your anti-slop cop.

[–] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh awesome!

He currently lives at Funhole and has 3 episodes out (and a few scribbles here n there). More to follow.

My son drew his younger brother the other day. Now, I'm not saying it's a shitty scribble, but it's no Vermeer. I'll take this over any AI slop or those garbage NFTs because this little drawing will always be more valuable to me.

[–] HerbGrower@slrpnk.net 65 points 1 day ago (4 children)

I drew on some wood a few weeks ago. Need to find some more wood scraps to try some more.

[–] amicia@discuss.amicia.net 10 points 1 day ago

Cute :3 (I can smell that picture >.<)

(Poorly) drawn on Android, via the FOSS app Butterfly (I don't use it much, but I recommend it if you want a basic FOSS drawing app to do the occasional doodle in)

Thanks OP for inspiring me to doodle this silly little thing. It's been years since I did much drawing, so it was fun to get out of my comfort zone.

Well, then! Fuch you, too!

[–] katiecakes@lemmy.blahaj.zone 46 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Hell yeah. I've never done any visual art before but I just started trying last week, specifically as an anti-AI act. Just drawing what I see when I'm bored, and following a book I got.

It has been amazing watching the transformation around San Francisco the past few years. Just a few years ago, all the billboard advertisements and conversations you would hear were about cloud services or big data. The whole start up grifting ecosystem quickly changed to AI everything. Now every advertisement is some stupid company that wants you to use its "harness" or "router" in addition to paying for your model access. Everyone is trying to keep up the same hype game but now everyone is just a glorified prompt engineer sitting between your money and a handful of AI companies. It's a very weird ecosystem to see a lot of people trying to sell useless shit to each other with Anthropic/OpenAI/etc in the middle.

And if you're some poor bastard just getting out of school hoping to get into any kind of job and you think being a prompt engineer is going to be a career path.. Just LOL

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago

I'd rather see your shittiest scribble than one AI slop

What am I supposed to do with this, then?

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

John Frusciante's first few solo albums are so much better than any lifeless AI-generated music

Snail Mail's first EP Stick, which I believe is only on YouTube

Julien Baker's first band Forrister / The Star Killers, which you can find on Bandcamp

Red Hot Chili Peppers' first demo EP

The list goes on and on. They're not polished, but they're better than the polished turds AI makes

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

"Shitty scribble" is a risky level of open-to-interpretation

[–] Smorty@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

the family face is what does it for me. its what makes it feel human and not just represent whatever the internet thinks

[–] Bluegrass_Addict@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 day ago

AGREED.

nothing triggers me more when I go on shitty youtube, and see a video for a videogame and they used AI to generate garbage when a literal in-game screenshot is free and 1 keystroke...

it's dishonest and I immediately assume the 'content slop creator' doesn't give a damn

[–] aburrito@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I’m embracing gaucher and messier stuff in my graphic design work, because at a certain point it’s just my style and it’s not from a canva bot. Weird how like it took the slop-death of the internet to get some pride in my rougher edges
