Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

"What is up?" They're up your butt, and we still haven't been able to fight them?

A planetary flag kind of makes me feel like we’re gearing up for war.

[–] pruwybn@discuss.tchncs.de 10 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

So you hold it in front of Mars, and now the Earth flag looks like Mars? Come on, think it through.

[–] tyranny@crazypeople.online 3 points 5 hours ago

a flag specifically for distinguishing this planet, that when taken anywhere it would be useful to distinguish origin planet, fails to do so. genius (i'm agreeing with you)

[–] Star@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

Hey that's like the inversion of the flag i always dreamt of for earth when i was a kid

If you make the border the opaque part, then whatever you look at through the flag 'is' Earth. Very poetic imo, and an excellent picture frame

[–] call_me_xale@lemmy.zip 8 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

You could even do this without plastic if you just hem around a circular hole.

[–] JillyB@beehaw.org 2 points 3 hours ago

I'm putting my face in the hole and being like "the whole world is about me. Also Japan is just red earth.

[–] MoffKalast@lemmy.world 20 points 8 hours ago (2 children)

"I said the real Earth flag."

[–] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 4 points 3 hours ago

Haah. I know they've tried to cram all the continents on to the same side of the globe to make us look united, but in doing so they've excluded new zealand. Sorry kiwis. Also Tasmania but they don't count.

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 7 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Hey, it’s the equal earth projection!

[–] MoffKalast@lemmy.world 3 points 4 hours ago

Here you are all equally worthless!

[–] expatriado@lemmy.world 149 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

plastic flag to represent our planet, fitting

[–] ValiantDust@feddit.org 33 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

If instead of flying it from one pole, we use two and stretch the flag between them, we might be able to kill some birds with it to make it even more representative

[–] LemmySuxNow@reddthat.com 13 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Make it real thin too so it shreds and spreads plastic all over

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago

Also make the poles only go one way and the standard way to deal with wanting to lower the flag is to burn it and then raise a new one when it's time to go up.

Also, in the spirit of globalization, move the flag to the other side of the world for each step in its manufacture.

[–] Honytawk@discuss.tchncs.de 25 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Skull and knives?

So the aliens know we like to kill each other with knives and have a skeleton?

We can't know if aliens even have a skeleton themselves, let alone bleed when cut by a basic-ass knife.

[–] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 1 points 49 minutes ago

Shows the average stupidity of the human I guess.

[–] derry@midwest.social 39 points 11 hours ago (5 children)

Sex flag. Let the aliens know what's up

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 10 points 6 hours ago

The flag of Earth:

Just a big upside down pineapple on top of the LGBTQ+ flag so the aliens know we are down for anything and thirsty fr

Instructions unclear, now stuck on party bus

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 19 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Dynamic flags will only cause headaches.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

Whereas dynamic headaches very rarely cause flags.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 5 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I'd say every nation state is a dynamic headache and they all have flags

Am i the only one who likes the UN flag?

[–] MoffKalast@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

By vexillology standards it's a bit meh. Tiny ass details so it's impossible to see from a distance and so overcomplicated that it's impossible to draw by hand. At least it doesn't have text though so simplify the seal and then we're talking.

[–] Voixe2@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 8 hours ago

But by the standards of anyone outside of r/vexillology, it is a pretty sick flag that should definitely be used everywhere

[–] Lushed_Lungfish@lemmy.ca 10 points 10 hours ago

Aliens: These stupid monkeys are offering to remove their skin and give us their skulls?

Shattered Glass Japan (inversed)

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 14 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

My favorite idea for a global flag was a small, sky blue pennant that’s hung above every country’s flag.

[–] Zorcron@lemmy.zip 15 points 11 hours ago (7 children)

I’m still a fan of a variation of this one, if used to represent our species as a whole.

[–] im_fine_sandy@nord.pub 1 points 3 hours ago

It's not terrible, if it were to represent our species.

However, until we are an interplanetary species representing ourselves to other intelligent species I think a flag for "earth" is more relevant in most contexts.

For example, if an earth flag was flown along side a country's flag, that conveys an intention of unity and cooperation. If a human flag is flown there it doesn't convey much additional meaning IMO.
