I hate being conspiracy minded, but people sure do seem to focus on the money doge didn't save.

It wasn't about the money. It was about plausible deniability when they wanted to fire whole departments or individuals that would push back against their agenda.

and the data grab

[–] bigbangdangler@reddthat.com 5 points 8 hours ago

Reason #388277485 that this dude should never be listened to, never be rich, never run a company, never be schmoozing with the fascists at Mar-a-Lago....

But he is doing all those things, and with this being reason #388277485, I fear that pointing it out is entirely fruitless. He'll continue to do what he does until there are real consequences.

even something as extreme as eliminating veterans wouldn't reduce it that much

They tore down every Chesterton’s Fence. Actually kind of impressive levels of moran.

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 25 points 1 day ago (2 children)

It was never about that. It was about dismantling and defunding federal institutions which were overseeing industries. And in that they succeeded brilliantly.

[–] DillDough@lemmy.zip 7 points 11 hours ago

Don't forget getting access to practically all data in the US, creating a database of it and immediately giving credentials to foreign agents who logged in from their own countries and viewed all of it.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 4 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

It was mainly about stealing the data

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 5 points 9 hours ago

Data is nice but having no federal institutions able to do anything about all the illegal shit your companies is probably even nicer

[–] sheetzoos@lemmy.world 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

America should still treat nazis like it's 1942.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

You mean take advantage of the situation and use its power to oppress the rest oh the world for the next 80 years?

[–] jabeez@lemmy.today 32 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yet he's still listened to and taken seriously by our not-at-all-incompetent 4th estate. Literal Nazi salutes, DOGE, endless times being hilariously wrong, yet there are never any consequences, he just rolls on failing upward.

Don't forget the constant tweets that sound like they came straight out of the Turner Diaries.

Cut from, duplicate, then re-attach it? No, that doesn't make sense either.

When this is over, Musk will be among the Top 5 on trial, along with Trump, Miller, Hegseth, and Noem. Probably RFK, Jr., too. The question won't be the length of their sentences, that would be life without parole, the question is which of them get the Death Penalty.

Edit: And Blanche. I knew I was forgetting someone.

[–] A_norny_mousse@piefed.zip 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

And assets seized, hoping they don't pop when you look at them wrong. Or that there's any left at all by then.

Frankly I think that would be a worse punishment for someone like Me-me-me-lon: to have to live like any other shmuck, unable to get a normal job, with secret photos and schadenfreude articles in dubious outlets.

... ahh, one can dream ... but seriously, I do believe there will be a sort of Nuremberg2.0 eventually. I just hope it'll happen before they bomb half the world and kill 10s of millions of people.

OTOH, they already started doing that.

[–] imetators@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Cmon. You know it won't happen. You know you, me and millions of others want it to. But we have to be real. It won't.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Why not? We can make it happen. We just have to make our elected officials fear us more than they fear doing nothing.

That's starting to happen. In past elections, nothing happened when they did nothing, but 2024 broke America Voters. We kicked out MAGA and Schmuck & Jeffries helped them regain power, and the Citizens rebelled, American-style, which means we mobilized the vote. Nearly every special election was bad news for MAGA, as they lost most of them to Democrats, and they were even bad for Dems, since many of them were Socialists.

Now we are prepared to take back the House and probably the Senate, and we're doing it with no help from the losers in office. They want us to elect more losers like them, and we aren't having it. Despite all their efforts, on both sides (my loser DEM Congress Rat actually signed that evil MAGA letter against Socialism, the fucking traitor), angry Socialists are coming to DC with the full endorsement of the Citizens, and any new Congressional leadership will have to commit to punishing MAGA, or they won't be reelected in 2028, when we'll vote another round of cowardly Dems.

The voters are hunting scalps, and we really don't care if they are MAGAs or Loser Democrats, and our incumbents are already scared. Jeffries won't commit to Healthcare or Impeachment, but he is acknowledging that the next Democratic Congress will be focused on investigating MAGA.

These people WILL be punished, or America can no longer continue to exist. This situation where America is just the country where any shithead can come here and abuse and exploit our labor and resources is unsustainable. We have to systematically attack each element of their strategy - MAGA, the Sociopathic Oligarchs, Corporations, law enforcement, the Tax Code, the economy, SCOTUS, etc. - and reconfigure each of them to service the CITIZENS, and not the wealthy.

After the midterms, we will know if we're getting what we want if the new Congress eject Schmuck & Jeffries, and replace them with Warriors. We need to start letting our current elected officials know that we expect them to NOT support the two current cowards.

And when the investigations start, Schmuck & Jeffries should be as deeply investigated as MAGA, because we'll find out that they've been working for MAGA all along. I want to see any corrupt Dems go to jail, too.

We just have to make our elected officials fear us more than they fear doing nothing. [...] That’s starting to happen.

No it isn't. You're still making the mistake of assuming your elections matter when the damage has been done long before you went to the ballot box.

Wake me up with the USA's populace wakes up again and actually overthrows its blatant, obvious tyranny like it did 250 years ago. I mean you can go through the Declaration of Independence line by line right now and see each entry reflected in the world around you; 250 years ago this was cause for revolution.

But unfortunately revolution interferes with getting the latest gadget, watching the antics of dumbasses on reality TV or whatever the Hell else is going on that's making all y'all miss the enormous problems that are growing ceaselessly in your nation.

Keep dreaming, unwitting identity politics dupe.

Yeah, he's a liar and a fool. He shouldn't be trusted to run a lemonade stand, much less the government

[–] Sibshops@feddit.cl 4 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I can't wait for those promised DOGE checks to come in.

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

They'll probably send it along with the 5000$ voter bribe, saves on the postage

Any other sub, I'd demand you put an NSFW tag on this 🤮

[–] JeffersonBlue@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's not even a good rate of return though - barely over 5%. The S&P 500 made over 16% in that same time period. Sure there are fewer zeroes at the end, but millions of regular people made 3x the % increase that Musk did.

[–] RoundTheBlockTwice@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This graph is of expenditure...

[–] JeffersonBlue@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Doh! I completely misunderstood it.

[–] danielfm123@lemmy.zip -3 points 1 day ago (4 children)

Not American here: what is wrong about DOGE auditing government spending?

[–] Rothe@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

Because that is not what happened or what they were doing or even what they were claiming to be doing.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

They let essentially college students feeding questions to LLM access data they never should have had access to and then let them decide the details of cutting at the broad direction not to save money but cut the things that the administration just didn't like, without regard for law.

Ultimately resulting in no significant savings, lots of good work being undone to the point of people dying for lack of aid.

In theory, a well experienced group operating within the confines of law to identify inefficiency with how the mission is accomplished might be good. DOGE was not this.

The biggest and most obvious clue, it was all Musk wanting to backronym something to DOGE. Nothing good comes out of musk trying to so something like a 14 year old kid would.

[–] danielfm123@lemmy.zip 1 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

But all government spending should be open... There shouldn't be "secrets"

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 2 points 7 hours ago

I'd like you to think for just a few minutes. See if you can't come up with some kind of government spending that should be kept secret. Take your time and really think.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

The spending was not secret, but individual citizens' personal information was also scrutinized, which should not be considered wide open.

[–] bold_atlas@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

And how do you fucking think DOGE was uncovering "secrets" by stealing social security data? What fucking secrets could a random grandmother with diabetes have that you'd want?

Musk wanted it for his data farms. What is anyone else supposed to have gotten from it?

[–] kboy101222@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Instead of eliminating programs that actually were wasteful, they cut aid, education, and science programs.

And the programs that were wasteful that they claimed to have cut just weren't. They straight up lied about cutting billions in contracts

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Beyond that, DOGE was a libertarian project to privatize and deregulate.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

they cut all those other programs so they can afford the BBB tax cuts.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Others have covered the most obvious flaw: it was 100% ineffective, causing chaos in government without any meaningful spending decrease.

But here's the real reason, and it comes together with the other real reason: DOGE was never intended to be about "government efficiency". It was intended to give Elon Musk access to all the information he could get his grubby little hands on for private enrichment and to shut down the very government departments that were in a position to regulate his companies.

[–] GenosseFlosse@feddit.org 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

That was never the goal. The goal was to remove rules and regulations that would limit the power of companies; rules that where put in place exactly because the same corporations had abused their powers before, harming others in the process. Each rule and regulation exists for a reason.

[–] ZDL@lazysoci.al 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

… and to shut down the very government departments that were in a position to regulate his companies.

The goal was to remove rules and regulations that would limit the power of companies …

Is there an echo in here?
