Classic republican. Doesn't give a shit about a problem, until they're personally affected by it.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 57 points 1 week ago (5 children)

Every single one has to get hurt individually to understand. It’s probably an undiagnosed learning disability

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Pretty sure, Republican is the diagnosis.

[–] BeardededSquidward@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Remember a joke about how you don't need to have brain damage to be a Republican, but it sure does help.

That's a lot of people, let's get started.

[–] Malica@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago (2 children)

As someone with 3 learning disabilities, don't put that asshole on us. Disabled people are often more empathetic in my experience.

[–] Steve@startrek.website 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I stand by my comment, with the understanding that this specific disability has turned these people into Nazi sheep. Unrelated types of disability are not part of this discussion.

And even then only that one very narrowly defined specific thing that effected them personally becomes an exception. Every other progressive thing is still bad without question.

Maybe she should look into some of the other things she thinks are dismissable identity politics, other than the one that personally affected her.

[–] ExLisper@lemmy.curiana.net 70 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You mean she should have some empathy and care for other people? Like some fucking libtard?

[–] celeste@kbin.earth 27 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No of course not! Then I'd be using the language of the left (treating empathy as a virtue) to try and communicate with her. She needs to figure out how those DEI labeled things would personally help her and her loved ones. I'm already on thin ice suggesting she should learn about things before cementing an opinion.

But...if this one thing she learned about would have protected her from being sad, maybe there are other things? Maybe she or her loved ones won't eat glass in the future if there are third parties making sure there is no glass in popsicles? Wouldn't eating glass make her unhappy? Don't companies keep accidentally getting glass in our food now that there is less money for the government to go around and check? Sure, a liberal might also eat glass and that would be cool and fun, but - oh no! I fucked up! Now Chrissy is entirely antiregulation until someone she knows is actually poisoned.

[–] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 1 week ago

We know they am have a problem with empathy, but it’s really introspection that is missing or repressed in their community and religion.

They are taught to replace introspection with prayer and hearing the word of God.

The Left loses the Right as soon as bike lanes are tied into identity politics. Multimodal equity is simply “freedom of movement” to a Republican.

Bruh. Are you fucking kidding me? Everyone who has been arguing for bike lanes and public transit has been calling it something along the lines of freedom of movement for years. We've been mocking how "muh freedum" people also see a veritable tank as the only reasonable means of getting from place to place, and oppose everything else. You DO NOT need knobby tires and 4WD and a 6 inch lift to go to Sam's Club. You'll be perfectly fine doing it in a stock Toyota Corolla.

[–] grue@lemmy.world 50 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

It's always projection. In reality, the right-wingers are the ones trying to tie bike lanes to "identity politics."

They tie anything they're told to to identity politics. I don't think they can comprehend reality at all without that filter on constantly.

[–] Schmoo@slrpnk.net 10 points 1 week ago

Right-wingers are unable to distinguish between the content and the frame, so they assume that however conservative media packaged a leftist argument for them is just how it came from the source.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 57 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Republicans and Democrats are often arguing for the same thing using completely different languages.

That's where I stopped reading.

[–] bampop@lemmy.world 39 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

And yet...

I thought bike lanes were a DEI project

I’m a Republican, and in nine months of advocating for safer streets, I have yet to meet another one.

The cognitive dissonance is strong with this one

Trying to make these threads meet, I guess the point she's trying to make is that after the leopards ate her face, she came to understand that the reason Republicans oppose everything that benefits the public is not because they are stupid and/or evil, but because Democrats are failing to communicate in a way that appeals to them.

[–] acockworkorange@mander.xyz 6 points 1 week ago

But of course that's the Democrats fault. Thanks, Obama!

[–] orenj@leminal.space 37 points 1 week ago

I hate people so much. Oh, whats that? The big authority man told you thing was bad? You're just gonna accept it at face value and let him do whatever he wants? Oh nooo, your fucking beloved family member is dead now, and nothing less would have convinced you. Guess authority man was wrong about this one little thing

[–] brianary@lemmy.zip 34 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Why is it always the left that has to dumb things down for the right?

[–] elbucho@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

Because... they're dumb?

So that is easy. Religion is based on tradition, and the right is heavy based on religion. Tradition is all about doing a thing without really knowing why. So it skews heavily toward the non-critical thinkers.

But when Republicans talk about freedom, the progressives hear privilege. Aren’t the Left and the Right essentially saying the same thing?

No. The fuck is wrong with you?

[–] SuiXi3D@fedia.io 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes, they are DEI, and that’s the point.

"I thought something obviously stupid because nothing is real unless it affects me. But then it affected me! ¡Que sorpresa!"

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 23 points 1 week ago (6 children)

There's something about being in a car that makes people fucking nuts.

I was walking home from public transit yesterday and the street I was crossing (admittedly, jaywalking) was in a red light and the car I was crossing in front of was slowing down, coming into a stop behind another stopped car.

The motherfucker still rolled his window down and yelled: "Use the crosswalk!"

All I did was slow him up for one second, going into a stop, behind another car, at a red light.

Probably stupid, but I stopped, turned, and thanked him profusely and politely (though sarcastically too) for thirty seconds and the cowardly little prick didn't even have the balls to keep his window down.

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 32 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Always remember that prior to cars, the street was a public place designed for pedestrians. They took that away from us with the "jaywalking" PR campaign.

[–] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Absolutely.

Just didn't get why the guy gave a damn under the circumstances. It didn't (and doesn't) make any sense, though I sincerely hope he thought he was going to get shot when I turned around and pissed himself.

[–] sem@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I once saw somebody literally red in the face, slamming their hands against the steering wheel, while driving a car, just because they were in bumper to bumper traffic.

Then they revved the car, sped forward like a yard, and slammed on the brakes.

Clearly this person was more inconvenienced than the one who had to slow down for you, but i think it illustrates how frustrated and helpless car drivers can feel when affected by "traffic", all without realizing that they are themselves the traffic.

When you're walking or biking, I think you are much less affected by traffic, hence bicycle messengers.

I've also read somewhere that public transit bus drivers have some of the worst stress of all jobs, because they have so much pressure on them, but so much of their job is outside of their direct control (traffic, passengers, etc.)

[–] grue@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

There’s something about being in a car that makes people fucking nuts.

It's such a well-known phenomenon that Disney was making cartoons about it 76 fucking years ago!

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 6 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I held someone up for about 10 seconds the other day while getting out of a parking spot. I couldn't see him for all the other cars until I was about 1m out of the spot. I was reversing carefully so people could react to me coming out, and so I could spot someone if they didn't. This dude comes speeding up, honking his horn, waving his arms around giving me the finger as if I'd just tried to kill him. His honking surprised me, so I block the brakes in case I'm about to cause an accident. If this dumb fucking cunt, who I wasn't even close to hitting, and who had plenty time and opportunity to see me hadn't honked, and instead just slowed slightly down, I would've been out of his way in half the time.

People in my area have become a lot less patient in trafic, and have become a lot more agressive about any slight inconvenience.

I've always tried to make plenty of room for other drivers, letting them get out of their parking spot with plenty of space, since they can't see me nearly as well as I can see them, but seems I'm the only one trying to make driving easier for other people.

Yet somewhere along the way, we turned roads into a political argument

Yeah. You know who is "we" here? Republicans

They only care when it impacts them personally. Fuck them, selfish pricks.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 7 points 1 week ago

Oh, it impacted them.

[–] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 1 week ago

What in the stupid?

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

I’m sorry for the loss, the road did indeed fail, and I am happy there’s at least one Republican who cares about road safety, but …….

There’s a whole lot of twisted logic trying to make it seem like “both sides the same”. I mean, I wouldn’t argue it since she does see the light after it affected her personally, but wtf

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Welllllll, bike lanes ARE DEI! They're inclusive of people who don't have cars.

I don't think you could explain the ideas behind DEI to a conservative though.

How are bikes even DEI? Riding a bike is ableist and exclusionary. In order to ride a bike, a person must have two reasonably strong legs (or arms, in the case of a handcycle) and to go any great distance, the rider needs to be in pretty good shape.

I am not saying we should not have bike lanes, since they provide an additional, clean and healthy mode of transportation, but I just don't see them as DEI.

[–] Funkt4st1c@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Easy, "DEI" means "some stuff that changes the status quo and makes my life 0.0001% different sometimes"

Words lose all meaning when held by a bigot

[–] saimen@feddit.org 12 points 1 week ago

Using DEI as a negative adverb is just openly admitting being a fascist.

So you want uniformity, inequality and exclusion?

It's like being against antifascism.

[–] adarza@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 week ago

because poor people or non-whites might use them to travel outside of their own neighborhoods and into the domain of white folk with more money.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

It’s DEI because “everyone I know drives a car”
