I learned about that age too. But in my case it was because a friend and I were arguing about how long it would take to pick a lock in real life versus Dungeons and Dragons. We both learned to do it and it turned out that picking most locks is absurdly easy. Your home is not as secure as you think it is. Just saying. Sleep well.
I learned that from watching the Lockpicking Lawyer. Any lock can be picked, generally pretty quickly. Locks keep out opportunists looking for an easy target. If someone is determined to get in, they're gonna get in.
Or if you use a master lock, you could use another master lock to open it
Or a thin piece of metal, or a couple wrenches, or an insistent stare
It's scary fast even for me and I'm really just a dabbler. I came home one day and my wife had gone out unexpectedly. I hadn't brought my house keys because I didn't think I'd need them. I happened to have a small screwdriver and paperclip in the car. I bent up the paperclip a bit and used the screw driver as a tension bar. I literally took 2-3 SECONDS to open my locked house door.
Needless to say, I replaced the lock but even so, locks really just keep the polite people out.
I don't think there are many actually criminal lockpickers, even so. It's a fun hobby, and a fairly lucrative trade if you decide to get into it. Most regular thieves are not that motivated, and simply use the advanced technique of "LOL, it wasn't locked." Others just use the venerable "footpick".
That's leaving aside car thieves, who again generally just rely on forgetful car owners; but they do seem more likely to use a bent-up coat hanger and a modicum of skill. I guess it's lower stakes to break into a car, where you definitely know no one is in there, than to risk an encounter with a possibly armed person at home.

This reminded me that I've wanted to buy a lockpicking set for a while, so I ordered one now 😅
I don't know where you live, but keep in mind that in many US states, if a cop happens to see you with lock picks, it's considered possession of burglary tools unless you are a locksmith.
If any person have in his possession any tools, implements or outfit, with intent to commit burglary, robbery or larceny, upon conviction thereof he shall be guilty of a Class 5 felony. The possession of such burglarious tools, implements or outfit by any person other than a licensed dealer, shall be prima facie evidence of an intent to commit burglary, robbery or larceny.
