It's a little more than one. And these days there are ones that aren't cheese at all.
This one was on the shelf right next to it.
Water, Food Starch, Palm Oil, Modified Food Starch, Milk Protein Concentrate, Salt, Natural Flavor, Sodium Phosphate, Carrageenan, Stabilizer (Xanthan, Locust Bean, Guar Gums), Sorbic Acid As A Preservative, Lactic, Acid, Artificial Color.
That's on the buyer. Go to the deli and get American cheese from there.
Nearest "deli" is Walmart, 7 miles away. I traveled just 1.2 miles to save gas.

It melts too good, so it's trash now.
Honestly still looks a pretty damn good cheese toastie
Mayo. You gotta use mayo. I was skeptical but after trying it I could not deny its results.
You mean with the cheese? Or on the outside instead of butter?
On the outside. Instead of butter.
Glad to read that. That was by far the less wrong option, still pass I think, but it's basically oil with a bit of egg so I'm not really sure why I find it so weird. I might brush a bit of egg on the bread for my next toasties, tho, that doesn't weird me out unlike spreading mayonnaise on the outside of a sandwich.
I tried it before and it had a mildly sour tang to it that I did not enjoy at all. Iβll stick to my butter
I do both sides toasted with mayo. Lightly at first on the "inside" flip them over and put the cheese on the hot bread, let the sides toast a few seconds then put together and flip as necessary. But you gotta make sure the mayo has toasted into the bread, so don't use too much. It's not a Monte Cristo!
Add cream cheese and prepare to be amazed.
Butter for the intimate 1 or 2 grilled cheeses, so they can be tended to.
Mayo if you have to make them reliably and fast, mayo gives you more wiggle room when it comes to burning compared to butter.
I'll take American "cheese" on a grilled cheese. I'd prefer cheddar on sourdough, though.
I will pretty much take any version other than this. Normally I make the bread and use cheddar.
I don't care for the cheap "cheese", but I will absolutely love American cheese - proper American cheese, which you can get from any grocery deli - rather than Kraft singles.
In my 60 American years, I believe my only experience with "American" cheese has been singles (Kraft or similar). I don't like those at all.
What's the distinction with the stuff in the deli?
It's a softer cheddar basically, still melts very well. I use it to melt uncooperative cheeses
Thank you!
If it's real, it should be colby and jack, not cheddar. That said, you can add sodium citrate to basically any meltable cheese to give it the same quality - as that's how they make it (from coldy and jack) :)
Colby-jack is a different cheese
Real "American" cheese was originally and still typically is colby and jack, gently melted, with sodium citrate added, which is what changes the texture completely and makes it nice and melty.
Kraft singles are designed to mimic this - and whatever, they are what they are, but a proper American cheese will be as tasty as the cheese it's made from. And technically, you can make your own - with any meltable cheese - although I probably never would. Difficult to get a loaf of it at a proper size to slice, difficult to slice..... heh
To me, even a good American cheese is really better in a grilled cheese or on a burger or whatever. It's fine to snack on, but if I'm snacking on cheese, I'm going to the cheese shop and spending way too much money on tasty little morsels :)
Thanks for this. I'll check out the deli and see what I can find.
I think I'll agree with your third paragraph regardless.
Kraft singles and American cheese are different things.
User name checks out for pasteurized process cheese
Cheese with maggots or mold is fine but the moment it becomes easy to use it's "othered". If it wasn't "American" it would receive a better reception.
I'd love to try the maggot cheese. I used to have more access to moldy cheeses but not anymore.
The melted wax is so satisfying and gooey though.
"Cheese".
Use real cheese you love and its even better!
